Research Licensed Practical Nurse - (LPN) - St Mary's Hospital - Richmond
$5,000 Sign on Bonus
Primary Function/General Purpose of Position -
Serve as research LPN in support of the research team at Bon Secours Liver Institute. Handle the essential job functions as outlined in this position description, while acting as a resource to others in these activities. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the delivery of patient care under the direction of the Physician. The LPN functions as an integral part of the health care team to provide the highest quality of care to the patient by preparing and assessing patients for provider visits. In this position, the LPN will observe, record, and report patient responses to medical care provided during appointments.
Essential Job Functions -
Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members in meeting patient/family needs
Implements the plan of care by providing direct basic nursing care in accordance with the LPN scope of practice
Appropriately labels and packages specimens, as trained
Assists in providing indirect care through various clerical or administrative duties as assigned by the registered nurse
Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested
Assists provider with procedures, treatments, and interventions
Other duties as assigned
ConnectCare
Enroll patients in research studies, associating visits/ appointments/ admissions with research studies (utilizing both reporting workbench report and within the patient chart), and reviewing charges via the Research Billing Report to determine which are billed to Insurance and which are billed to the research study.Project Management :
Organize and monitor clinical research observational and data collection studies.
Work with other Bon Secours health system departments participating in clinical research to ensure adherence to study regulations and adequate patient care.
Routinely interact with physicians, research nurses and coordinators, clinical trials sponsors, and other individuals / organizations participating in clinical trials regarding patient care and related issues
Complete CRFs and other documents at the time data is collected or immediately after the data becomes available. Obtain physician investigator’s signature on CRF’s, test results, and other documents as required and maintain copy per sponsor requirements after sponsor has reviewed and taken original. Retain completed CRFs for as long as required by sponsor.
Enter data into the BSMH ministry-wide Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) - SIgnalPath within required timeframe.
File source documents in participant binders.
Participate in pre-site-qualification meetings, site selection meetings, interim monitoring visits, audits, and complete all training required for each clinical trial.
Complete required human subjects research training and keep certification on file.
Patient Recruitment/Enrollment :
Communicate directly with patients.
Schedule appointments and evaluate patients for eligibility to participate in various programs to treat chronic liver disease.
Prepare for participant visits by setting up questionnaires, new consents, tablets, or other items that are applicable to that visit.
Obtain required medical information from patients and advise patients of visits,.
Direct Patient Care
Complete study collection forms necessary to evaluate effects of treatment on chronic liver disease.
Answer phone questions for patients concerning possible side effects of the treatments they are receiving as well as complications associated with chronic liver disease or any other acute illness. Assess this information and present to attending physicians within the Hepatology Section as appropriate.
Triage patient calls, arrange for appropriate care.
Arrange for special procedures for patients enrolled in clinical trials, including liver biopsies, ultrasounds, endoscopies, etc.
Room patients and clean/ turnover exam room(s)
Administer EKGs and other tests needed within scope of practice.
Completion/Close-out of Clinical Trials:
As each study closes:
Explain to patient how to follow-up for their care when study is completed.
If patient terminates study early -note the reason for file.
Complete all CRFs.
Complete all requests for corrections and return them to Sponsor.
Complete reports required by Sponsor and send final report to IRB.
Review regulatory binder, make sure all documents are present.
Store documents and inform Sponsor of storage location

Licensing/Certification
BLS Basic Life Support – (required)
LPN license current in Commonwealth of Virginia (required)
Work Experience
2 years of experience as an LPN (required).Training
