Position Summary/Description:
The Research Associate (Assistant Director of Biocuration) position will support ongoing curation efforts for the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg. The Assistant Director of Biocuration position will entail assisting the Director of the ClinGen-affiliated UNC Biocuration and Coordination Core in operation, management, and training of the core group. This individual will be expected to hire, train and supervise new employees in the standard methods and frameworks employed within the core; coordinate milestone, semi-annual, and annual reports for funding agencies; engage in grant writing and other funding opportunities. The Assistant Director of Biocuration will also participate in biocuration activities within ClinGen expert panels, and the activities of ClinGen working groups to help further advance ClinGen goals. In addition, the individuals will also participate in efforts to develop and/or refine policies and procedures used with the UNC Biocuration and Coordination Core as well as within ClinGen working groups. This position is part of the UNC Biocuration and Coordination Core leadership tea, and will require regular presentations outlining progress, metric, and milestones
Education and Experience:
A Ph.D. degree in genetics/genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field with 5 years of experience preferred. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in genetics and genomic medicine, specifically gene-disease validity and variant pathogenicity. They will also have the ability to effectively communicate to a broad audience, to train and mentor colleagues, to organize and carry out strategic planning, to comprehend and apply complex curation processes to various projects, and to read and critically evaluate the research literature to assess the state of knowledge about a genetic relationship.
In addition, an understanding of the scientific principles of biology, specifically the central dogma of genetics and a basic understanding of physiology and disease is preferred. Knowledge of online genetic databases such as OMIM , ClinVar and LOVD , as well as familiarity with computer databases and applications (e.g. Google Docs) and basic business applications (e.g. Microsoft Suite) is also preferred.
