About Regional Officer

  Contract Type : Full-time, permanent  

  Location: China

  The Regional Officer’s primary responsibility will be to meet student recruitment targets for mainland Chinese students to Surrey’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As a highly visible, in-market representative of the institution, the post holder will work closely with a China-based colleague and the UK-based, International Student Recruitment Manager (East Asia) in Surrey’s International Student Recruitment Office to fulfil agreed recruitment strategies.

  In addition, the Regional Officer will maintain regular contact with Study Group’s recruitment team based in China and to support with the recruitment of students to the Surrey International Study Centre, Pre-masters and International Year One programmes, when relevant.

  The Regional Officer will also have opportunities to contribute to other aspects of the University’s work in China, particularly in supporting the development of partnerships, Surrey’s alumni network, and in other parts of East Asia where the University works, namely; Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan and South Korea.

  Note: This role will require extensive travel within Mainland China, and possibly to other international markets in the region, as well as occasional travel to the UK.

  ABOUT THE ROLE

  Key Responsibilities:

  Student Recruitment

  Undertake recruitment activities in China, including attendance at exhibitions and visits to universities and schools, with a focus on the recruitment of students onto postgraduate taught programmes, postgraduate research programmes and undergraduate programmes at the University of Surrey.

   2. Education Agents Network

  Develop Surrey’s links with key education agents in Mainland China, undertaking training of counsellors and maintaining effective relationships with staff at agent’s offices across the country. Respond quickly and effectively to enquiries from agents, including managing enquiries received via the University’s main social media accounts and smaller agent-specific WeChat groups.

  School and partner network

  Utilise all means available to maintain and explore opportunities to expand relationships with recruitment networks across China, including local and international schools, partner institutions.

  Market research and insight

  Provide advice to the University on developments in the China market so as to inform the University’s China Marketing and Recruitment strategy. This would include but is not limited to advising on the acceptance of new qualifications, marketing activity and the opportunity to work with prospective partners across the industry.

   

  Marketing and social media

  Support our Marketing Executive (China) in the development of Surrey’s social media and digital engagement in China, including advice on development of Surrey’s website, Weibo, Little Red Book and WeChat accounts, in accordance with university guidelines.

  Communication with applicants

  Utilise Surrey’s Customer Relation Management (CRM) platform, calling campaigns, virtual meetings and face to face events and sessions to engage with, provide advice and nurture applicants/offer holders to/of Surrey.

  Administration and planning

  Provide monthly reports of activity and future plans while maintaining good records.

  General

  Undertake other activities as required and contribute fully to the work of Surrey’s international student recruitment team.           

  ABOUT YOU

  Essential

  · Educated to Degree standard or significant relevant experience

  · Experience of working in the higher education sector and / or knowledge of UK higher education

  · Experience of working in a marketing, sales or customer-facing role

  Candidates who possess the below will be advantageous:

  · Post Graduate qualification

  · Experience of International student recruitment in higher education

  · Knowledge of the University of Surrey (as a student and / or in a professional capacity)

  Aptitude, skills and disposition

  Technical

  ·Excellent bilingual skills in Mandarin Chinese and English (both written and verbal).  Knowledge of Cantonese would also be useful, though is certainly not essential.

  ·Comfortable working and completing tasks virtually, across multiple time zones.

  ·Good IT skills, including experience of using MS Teams and PowerBI (or similar platforms), MS Office, and email. Experience of email marketing would be beneficial.

  ·Experience of giving presentations and running small to medium sized events.

  ·Experience of dealing with cultural sensitivity issues requiring tact, diplomacy and a calm approach in difficult situations.

  ·Experience of using social media in a professional context.

  General

  ·Planning and organising - ability to complete work within deadlines and to agreed standards. Able to make and deliver long term plans, including the planning and execution of recruitment trips across multiple cities and provinces, within budget.

  ·Problem solving and decision-making - ability to analyse situations and to make complex decisions in situations where problem solving is not straight forward.

  ·Customer/Client service and support - actively seeks customer/client/ student feedback. Looks to continuously review and improve performance standards of self and team.

  ·Influencing, Persuasion and Negotiation Skills - capacity to advise others and deal with sensitive issues in difficult situations inside and outside own area.
