Description
The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating residential programming and resident centered special events. In additional, this position will support the Development Department with planning, coordination and execution of Agency fundraising special events. The Recreation Specialist will work with the Resource Development Department to partner with community-based organizations for onsite activities/events and coordination of off-site activities/events. The hours of this position is scheduled to best accommodate the agency’s needs. Occasional evening and weekend work should be anticipated.
Responsibilities:
Design, coordinate, and implement recreation activities and events that meet the needs and interests for residents of all ages, skill levels, and developmental abilities. Programming should promote health and nutrition, motor development, physical and emotional well-being and cognitive skill development, and promote inclusion of all youth. .
Provide and support the oversight and supervision of all youth on-site during Recreation Specialist’ coordinated events, activities, forums, functions, etc., along with coordinating off-site activities such as community events, field trips, etc.
In collaboration with the Director of Development establish partnerships with community-based organizations, advocacy groups, and other community based professionals to facilitate various educational and curriculum based workshops and forums including attending community events to build and strengthen community partnerships supporting diversity, equity and Inclusion for special events
Access and acquire community based educational and recreational resources, programs, and services for elmcrest departments serving youth.
Develop and maintain an annual calendar to include global learning and participation of community and worldly events and celebrations supporting youths’ diverse cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds.
Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and document client-specific engagement and activities
As a liaison between the Resource Development Department and elmcrest campus and community based programs, participate in various program/department meetings and trainings as needed and as applicable.
Oversee and facilitate youth based meetings such as youth committees, youth councils and other youth advocacy based forums.
Assist with the recruitment, management and oversight of volunteers, advisers and community based donors.
Coordinate the use and access of facilities for activities and events for elmcrest’ departments and to include scheduling, set-up, and takedown and determines materials, equipment, supervision, and expectation needs for each event or activity.
Publicizes and markets recreational programs and activities through various mediums such as fliers, brochures, newsletters, news releases, radio, and other media

Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Recreation or closely related field with two years relevant experience in recreation programming
Special Events planning experience required
Recreation experience with children preferred
Experience with Microsoft Office, Excel and Power Point, and Raisers Edge database skills a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent attention to detail and solid project management skills
Able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment
Comfortable interacting with youth, and engaging and intervening with youth demonstrating appropriate and professional social, emotional and physical boundaries.
Able to work occasional nights and weekends
NYS Driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier.
Able to relate to a dynamic environment. Flexible and able to problem-solve as unanticipated challenges present themselves.
Provides exceptional and professional customer service to all elmcrest departments and community based organizations and stakeholders.
Must understand and demonstrate the principles of care to which Elmcrest ascribes and trains.
Essential Job Functions:
Ability to sit, squat, crouch and stand for elongated periods of time
Ability to lift 50lbs without assistance
Ability to lift arms over head in upward reaching motion
Ability to walk up and downstairs up to several times per day.
