  Department Summary

The Institute for Policy Research and Engagement (IPRE) is an interdisciplinary organization that assists Oregon communities by providing planning and technical assistance to help solve local issues and improve the quality of life for Oregon residents. The role of IPRE is to link the skills, expertise, and innovation of secondary and higher education with the economic development and environmental needs of communities and regions in the State of Oregon thereby providing service to Oregon and learning to the students involved. The Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps Program is an off-campus service-learning program housed under the IPRE umbrella.

The mission of the RARE AmeriCorps Program is to increase the capacity of rural communities to improve their economic, social, and environmental conditions through the assistance of trained graduate-level members who live and work in communities for 11 months (1,700 hours). Qualified college graduates (with a bachelor's degree) and graduate-level students who are selected as RARE members assist communities and agencies in the development and implementation of plans for achieving a sustainable natural resource base and improving rural economic conditions while gaining community-building and leadership skills.

  Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to help coordinate the day-to-day management of the RARE AmeriCorps Program. Duties fall within the following general categories: outreach and recruitment, member/host site placement process, member support, training coordination, and other duties as assigned. The RARE Program Coordinator will work closely with all members of the RARE Team (fellow Program Coordinator, Program Assistant, Grants and Contracts Coordinator, and RARE Program Director), and will report to the RARE Program Director. There are no direct supervisory responsibilities, but this position is responsible for helping support 30-35 RARE AmeriCorps members on an annual basis. The Program Coordinator does not have any direct budgetary authority but is responsible for assisting the RARE Program Director in making programmatic decisions that are in line with the annual operating budget of the program.

The Program Coordinator will serve alongside the RARE Team as frontline contact for all members and host site organizations. This position will provide support via telephone, email, or in-person to current RARE members and supervisors and potential members and supervisors. Primary responsibilities include planning multi-day training sessions and/or conferences; playing a lead role in member and community recruitment; facilitating the placement process and End of Service obligations; and conducting site visits.

This position reports directly to the RARE Program Director who will review the work of this employee on an ongoing basis by means of regular conversation, discussion of problems as they arise, and review of reports. The RARE Program Director will conduct annual reviews for formal performance appraisal.

  Additional expectations of the position:

  • Frequent overnight travel (about 20-30 nights per year). Because of the workload during late spring, summer, and early fall, vacations during this time may be limited.

  • Must pass a background check per National Service Criminal History Check standards (NSOPW, State, FBI).

This position is based in Eugene with some level of flexibility including the option to work remotely with frequent commuting to campus. All adjusted work arrangements require supervisor and leadership approval.
