  Job Description

  NREL’s Hybrid Energy Systems team has an immediate opening for a full-time Project Controller. The Hybrid Energy Systems group performs research to advance the research, integration, and demonstration of thermal, mechanical, wind, solar, battery and other storage technologies as well their end uses in mobility, buildings, and industrial processes involving the orchestration of 1000s of edge devices at individual, local, regional, to national scales. In this pursuit we work closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), industry partners, and academic institutions. The group’s work involves the development of modeling, simulation, emulation, control, and optimization approaches for various combinations of energy generation and end use applications. The Project Controller position will support NREL’s Community Technical Assistance Programs to support research staff in organizing projects and deliverables, tracking projects to established budgets and timelines, and interfacing with technical and support organizations across the laboratory to keep projects on track.

  Project Controller duties include a variety of tasks that support technical projects. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  Monitoring Subcontracts: Work with technical leads to develop work descriptions, work with subcontracts to expedite subcontract execution, track accruals, approve invoices, track and retain/file subcontract deliverables.

  Planning Projects: Work with technical leads to develop work descriptions, budgets and timelines for new projects. As projects are ongoing track and retain deliverables against the project timeline.

  Reporting: Provide regular client reporting on subcontracts and projects. Assist technical leads with developing monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

  Sample specific tasks:

  Develop subcontracting plans.

  Work with technical leads to develop work statements, track subcontract execution and management, track subcontract budgets and invoices.

  Work with project leads to establish and track against timelines, plan resources into tracking programs, monitor progress against deliverables, and track costs against plans.

  Track technical deliverables and send reminders and updates to NREL research leads.

  Organize and maintain project files such as project deliverables, statements of work and annual operating plans.

  Plan, organize, and execute project activities such as webinars, client meetings, workshops, and conferences.

  Assist with submission of documents to DOE’s Project Management Center (PMC) system.

  Level II: This staff member is expected to collaborate on task assignments with senior staff.

  Level III: The individual is expected to perform all responsibilities with limited oversight and lead the development of activities in each of the specific duties and responsibilities.

  Basic Qualifications

  Level II: Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.

  Level III: Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

  Additional Required Qualifications

  Experience in finance, cashflow analysis, and business processes.

  Ability to organize, multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.

  Good oral and written communications skills.

  Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with team members and project leaders.

  Ability to understand technical concepts and data analytics.

  Demonstrated desire to continually develop project management skills, including learning how to use and apply new financial analysis or project management tools or using existing tools to meet project needs.

  Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office 365 products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint ) or other computer software programs needed to effectively track and manage a project.

  Ability to prepare professional communications and documents that are appropriate for internal stakeholders and leadership.

  Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and collaboration skills including experience with customer/partner relationship and expectations management.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Experience in working with community-based projects is highly desirable.

  Knowledge and experience working with multiple stakeholders is desirable.

  Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

  Job Profile: Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

  NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
