POSITION PURPOSE
The Temporary Project Appointment Marine Biology Adviser delivers student services and recruitment and supports curriculum management related to the Marine Biology major. The advisor is one of two student services staff in the UW Marine Biology (UWMB) program and works under the supervision of the Marine Biology Academic Services Assistant Director. The major serves over 400 students as well as a growing number of prospective students and program alumni.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Academic Advising
Advise prospective and current UW students about academic planning, petitions, university policies and procedures, career planning, and referrals to other UW services.
Manage regular and routine regular processes for Marine Biology majors and minors such as major/minor declaration, program orientation, outreach for low scholarship, satisfactory progress checks and graduation application.
Facilitate group advising including orientations, drop-in hours and sessions focused on specific topics (e.g., registering for internship or research credit, graduation applications).
Maintain secure and accurate student records and documents.
Manage advising caseload: Track and document communication with students and proactively contact students to address potential problems and/or connect to opportunities.Recruitment
Meet with prospective UW students in person and online to assist with program exploration and pre-application planning.
Participate in regular on-campus and online recruitment events for marine biology including (but not limited to): information sessions, participation in tabling events, career events, speakers, and orientation sessions.
Represent Marine Biology programs in campus-wide recruitment events such as the Admitted Student Preview Days and Husky Preview.
Support recruitment from Washington State Community and Technical Colleges by developing content for transfer newsletters and participating in recruitment events online and in person for prospective transfer students.Other program support
Collect and distribute opportunities and resources for marine biology students, such as scholarships, study abroad programs, employers and research experiences, through web, email and social media.
Support the planning and delivery of the annual Marine Biology Graduation Celebration.
Support and participate in other Marine Biology community (MARBIO, SAFS, FHL) undergraduate events such as workshops and socials.
Organize and distribute add codes available to marine biology students through MARBIO prefix and shared courses.
Provide additional course support to courses offered under the MARBIO prefix, including the ordering of textbooks and course evaluations.Campus connections and collaboration
Maintain strong connections and regular communication with the undergraduate advisers of closely related programs such as Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, Oceanography, Friday Harbor Laboratories and Biology.
Represent Marine Biology in committees and collaborative advising groups such as the College of the Environment Advisers and Envirolink.
Maintain up to date knowledge of university-wide academic advising systems, policies and resources by participating in regular meetings such as the UW all-advisers meeting, Student Academic Services/Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity gatherings and the Office of the University Registrar advising community forums. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in education, social sciences, or related field; and one-two years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated ability working with and for diverse populations.
Demonstrated ability with customer service and public speaking.
Demonstrated ability with project management.
Ability to handle confidential information responsibly. DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
Experience in education, recruitment, academic counseling, academic administration or curriculum management.
Working knowledge of UW policies, procedures and systems.
Experience working in higher education.
Experience with event planning. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This is a temporary 9-month project assignment appointment. The desired start date is between February and March of 2024.
