  Your role

CBC Yukon has an amazing opportunity in Whitehorse. We’re looking for an experienced journalist to help lead a team that drives local, innovative storytelling on audio, digital, video and social platforms. Our search is for someone who’s decisive, creative and passionate about everything that makes the Yukon what it is - people, communities, cultures, land, languages, arts, sports, politics and businesses.

The North is a place some of us are fortunate enough to call home, a place of culture, tradition, resistance, perseverance and innovation. The Yukon was built around stories whispered, sung, shared around the circles of campfires. As journalists and members of communities ourselves, we work to acknowledge the wisdom, struggles and joy, all of which shape the social, political, economic and natural topography of the territory.

Indigenous peoples are increasingly speaking out to claim their long-held rights and assert their influence. There are established and emerging immigrant communities. The Yukon is a territory in transition, where there’s space to learn, to experience, to travel, to build a career and a life.

As a Multi-Platform Content Producer assigned primarily to CBC Yukon’s audio shows, your central role is programming our shows, working with dedicated hosts, producers and reporters to assign and oversee the production of segments and stories on Yukon Morning, Midday Cafe and Airplay. CBC Yukon also contributes to a N.W.T-Yukon weekend show produced and hosted out of Yellowknife. You will lead daily team meetings to coordinate and participate in story chases while collaborating with News, Digital and Video Producers across the North and across Canada.

You will have the opportunity to initiate ideas and projects to engage and grow our audiences by reflecting and amplifying complex Northern stories. There will be latitude for initiative and creativity while adhering to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards, and practices. Besides initiating and producing work yourself, there is a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others, within CBC Yukon and with other CBC stations, shows, and hubs.

Working with an editorial leadership team led by CBC Yukon’s Executive Producer, you’ll collaborate with program staff to effectively, efficiently, and empathetically cover the stories and issues affecting our diverse audience across the Yukon. An understanding of local issues and our audiences across the territory is essential.

  Can you see yourself here?

You have a deep and demonstrated understanding of broadcast journalism, responsive, relevant news coverage, digital roll outs and strategic social media storytelling. You’re also keen to consider new kinds of story treatments on established and emerging platforms. You understand the role of public media in connecting with and building a strong, flourishing local community. You have experience creating content that embraces a diverse range of lived experiences.

You’re an excellent writer, and all-round communicator. You also have strong vetting skills. You’re insatiably curious, brimming with initiative. You work quickly, thoughtfully and collaboratively. You demonstrate flexibility and adaptability. You’re also a confident, compassionate, and inclusive leader. You inspire people to bring out their creative best. You’ve got experience mentoring, coaching and engaging with a team that brings a broad range of experience and interests. You’re open to new ideas and to feedback.

You’re a great planner and deft organizer. You can coordinate a small team and work in harmony in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment, from pitch, to gathering, to roll out. You are also committed to creating a trusting relationship with our established and emerging audiences by catalyzing, reflecting and responding to Yukon stories in our daily programming.

You understand our different platforms and how to shape a story to play into each one’s strengths. You’re on the lookout for new ways to connect, including podcasting, on-demand and streaming audio and video.

Nothing makes you happier than working with a team to undertake enterprise journalism. You’re paying attention to what people are talking about and you look for ways to bring those voices to the table. You understand that CBC Yukon is a place where conversations start and can be sustained and you want to ensure they’re shared far and wide.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A relevant post-secondary degree or equivalent years of experience.

Minimum of 5 years relevant experience of which 3 must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.

Strong understanding of the Yukon’s diverse social, political and cultural landscape.

Demonstrated experience in leading a team or unit.

Experience programming and producing audio shows in addition to demonstrated understanding of digital, video and mobile platforms.

Superior editorial decision making, critical thinking and listening skills.

A thorough knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Demonstrated ability to exercise quick editorial judgment.

  Highly developed vetting skills.

Ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively.

  Highly developed interpersonal skills.

  Highly developed organizational skills.

Excellent editing/production skills in Dalet and other audio editing software.

Ability to work independently and also participate as a member of a production team.

A valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company.

As required, you will perform the following tasks:

Coordinate resources and coverage plans for daily content creation, special projects, series, remote broadcasts and streaming content with a focus on CBC Yukon’s three daily audio shows.

  Lead story meetings.

Participate in the preparation of content for local, regional and national audiences, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and editing.

Write, vet and review scripts and question lines or the shows.

Aid in the critical analysis around story selections, treatment and placement, and provide feedback on the same.

Aid in determining the style, pace, tempo, line-up and format of shows.

Frequently contact newsmakers, organizations and community groups to develop a database of ideas for stories and/or programming specials.

Work with hosts to support best delivery and performance.

Provide regular feedback and coaching to experienced and developing journalists.

Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, is required.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
