Responsibilities
This position is in the Process Engineering group within the Capital Program Department at the Longview, Texas site. The process design engineer works with Operations and Manufacturing engineers, capital project engineers and research and development engineers in two primary areas: development of conceptual and definitive process designs for capital projects and support of on-going plant operations.
Primary responsibilities include:
Process simulation and HMB development for existing and new production facilities
Evaluation of existing processes and equipment
Design of new and modified equipment (distillation towers, heat exchangers and other fixed equipment)
Development of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) defining for new and existing production facilities
Participation in safety reviews of existing and proposed process facilities
The Process Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the front-end engineering (FEL) phase of capital projects, which will frequently involve coordination of efforts from various organizations and discipline engineers. The primary objectives of the process design engineer are development of safe, efficient, cost-effective designs and solutions which meet business objectives.
Specific job duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Lead process design efforts during the FEL phase on capital projects for the Longview plant site and on occasion, other worldwide Eastman facilities
Participate in Process Hazard Analyses and offer recommendations to ensure safe, efficient designs and operations
Develop or modify Heat and Material Balances and Flow Diagrams utilizing Aspen and other process simulation and design software for new and modified designs
Develop process designs for process equipment including heat exchangers, reactors of various configurations and types and distillation columns and specifications of pumps and piping
Work with equipment suppliers to design specialty components of process equipment such as mixers and column trays and packing
Conduct fluid flow hydraulic studies
Coordinate inputs from various groups to develop P&IDs for process changes or new facilities
Prepare process scope of work for use in development of cost estimates
Conduct engineering studies and troubleshooting of processes and unit operations to support Operations and Manufacturing
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering from accredited institution is required
Must have previous professional chemical engineering experience (5+ years preferred); at least two 2 years in a process design position preferred
Strong general chemical engineering skills with experience in capital project development
Experience as a lead process engineer on capital projects is preferred
Solid understanding of relief systems, pressure vessels, process piping and general process control strategies
Excellent communication, collaboration and coordination skills
Must be dedicated to safety in design as highest priority
Excellent design creativity and problem-solving skills to analyze process data, understand equipment operations and determine root causes of failures
Experience with the following software considered a plus: ASPEN, FRI, HTRI, AFT Arrow, AFT Fathom, Excel
