  Location:

  This position may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan’s lower peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

  We are looking for: Principal System Protection Engineer (NERC Compliance Engineer)

  The Principal System Protection Engineer is part of a highly specialized team of System Protection Engineers in the application of protective devices. The Principal System Protection Engineer requires extensive electrical expertise for defining and administering system protection philosophies, standards, and application criteria for devices used to isolate faults, safeguard people and equipment, and improve reliability on Consumers Energy's electric system. This position requires a broad knowledge of many aspects of electric distribution activities including system protection, design standards, planning, budget, operations, regulatory compliance, and customer needs.

  The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:

  Understanding of power system engineering concepts such as: protection and control schemes, device coordination during normal and abnormal system configurations, power flow, voltage regulation, power factor

  Familiarity with one-line, schematic and detailed electrical drawings

  Understandingofsymmetricalcomponents

  Understanding of electric power system modeling

  Ability to understand regulatory standards (NERC, FERC, MPSC, etc.), to develop and maintain processes to ensure compliance, and to influence standards through the rulemaking processes

  Collaboration skills

  Skillinanalyzingandorganizingtechnicaldata

  Written and verbal skills for communicating complex technical topics to diverse audiences including field employees, upper management and customers

  Ability to independently track project dates and ensure team deadlines are met

  We encourage you to apply if you have:

  Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience

  [OR] Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited university plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience

  In this role, you will be responsible for:

  Support Consumers Energy's electrical projects through the application of highly complex engineering concepts to model the power system and develop relay scheme recommendations and relay settings. Teach and train technical experts

  As a technical expert, support the performance of protective equipment through the Electric Field Lab, Planning, Design, Operations, Safety and others to ensure reliability of the electric system

  Respond to emergent outages, system reconfigurations, and fault analysis to support real-time operations and prompt customer outage restoration

  Manage compliance with regulatory standards (NERC, FERC, MPSC, etc.)

  Evaluatethe latest industry-changingtechnology and equipment (such as System Orchestrator,Inverter-basedResources,grid- storage batteries and microgrids) and develop specifications, standards, and applications of related protective schemes

  Represent Consumers Energy's System Protection interests in meetings with stakeholders including customers, vendors, transmission providers (METC/ITC), contractors, Design, Operations, the Michigan Public Service Commission, NERC, MISO, EPRI and upper management
