Posting Description:
As part of Corporate & Investment Banking Risk Management and Compliance, you are at the center of keeping JPMorgan Chase strong and resilient. You help the firm grow its business in a responsible way by anticipating new and emerging risks, and using your expert judgement to solve real-world challenges that impact our company, customers and communities. Our culture in Risk Management and Compliance is all about thinking outside the box, challenging the status quo, and striving to be best-in-class.
Principal investments are typically privately held financial instruments representing ownership interests or other forms of junior capital, primarily tax-oriented investments (TOI) and private equity investments made to enhance or accelerate the Firm's business strategies. Principal Investments have unique risk due to their illiquidity, lack of market transparency, and their "first loss" or junior capital status. TOI comprises a substantial majority of the Principal Risk (PR) portfolio. As a direct report of the Chicago-based TOI Risk Executive (Managing Director), you will focus exclusively on TOI which is comprised of two segments which monetize tax credits - Affordable Housing and Green Energy (wind, solar, and emerging technologies). In this Chicago-based role, you will work closely with the TOI Risk Executive to manage bespoke risk in this unique structured equity portfolio, ensuring that it has the full scope of required risk management and oversight. This is a new position created to assist with managing the robust growth occurring within the Green Energy space which is priority of JPM senior management.
Job Responsibilities:
Initially you will gain an understanding of the tax equity product by engaging with the TOI Risk Executive as he evaluates, screens, and provides feedback to the Business on investment opportunities. You will also engage directly with the Business to learn the product and understand the modeling and tax structuring. You will participate in Investment Committee, Portfolio Management, and Valuation meetings and follow-up on assignments.
Join front office on site visits and diligence sessions to independently assess sponsors, test investment thesis, and project viability.
Assess and evaluate front-office authored investment memos for both new investments and on-going portfolio management servicing. Apply critical risk judgment to challenge underwriting assumptions/conclusions, developing an independent view of conclusions, due diligence sufficiency, and technical considerations related to engineering assessments in renewable energy.
Take ownership of periodic projects including: 1) economic stress evaluation and documentation, 2) review of underwriting and portfolio management guidelines authored by the Business, and 3) prepare TOI Risk material for various senior management presentations.
Routinely meet with front office Portfolio Management/Asset Management deal teams to remain abreast of portfolio trends, watch lists, and upcoming challenges. Develop a well-informed forward-looking view of watch list assets. Work to improve format and efficiency of portfolio management reviews and reporting metrics.
Partner with Product Control, PR Middle office/Reporting to monitor timely and accurate capture of TOI positions for use in stress and limit reporting and various other upstream uses (legal entity, CCAR, regulatory filings, etc.). Review monthly data to ensure accurate capture of new position data in systems, performing variance and trend analyses, and offering commentary.
Required qualifications, capabilities and skills:
Minimum Bachelor's degree; Master's degree in Finance or other quantitative disciplines a plus.
Minimum 3-5 years work experience in the financial industry, preferably in risk management. Prior market risk / credit risk / investment risk is highly preferred.
