  The Opportunity

  This position is an onsite opportunity in the Abbott Diabetes Care Division. We are helping people with Diabetes lead healthier, happier lives.   As a Principal Engineer - Process Innovation, you will be a specialist professional individual contributor with comprehensive knowledge in medical device development and manufacturing. The FreeStyle Libre portfolio has been a cornerstone to Abbott’s successful business and has been developed on a platform of strong innovation throughout the organization. This role will require the successful candidate to be involved with multiple novel product and process development projects which compliment a culture of continuous improvement within Abbott Diabetes Care. The candidate must have the ability to drive execution of highly complex or specialized projects and liaise with cross-departmental stakeholders to drive completion. You may seek to adapt precedent and may make departures from traditional approaches to develop solutions. You will be expected to perform engineering studies and analysis to develop design specifications, process and product specifications, and system performance requirements and apply project management expertise to ensure successful outcomes. You shall develop technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties. You shall use appropriate investigation techniques and tools to solve problems and make sound design recommendations. You shall apply industry expertise to Abbott projects and stay informed of latest trends in technology by attending tradeshows and conferences. This role requires travel of approx. 25%, on average, with periods of increased travel up to approx. 50%. During the first year, the role will include a focus on delivery of a novel fully-automated production line. After this, the role will develop a broader scope of process innovation. This is an onsite opportunity in Alameda, CA, Austin, TX, or Buffalo Grove, IL.

  What You'll Do

  Lead the identification and assessment of opportunities for process innovation within the manufacturing environment.

  Develop and implement strategies to enhance automation in manufacturing processes, aiming for efficiency and quality improvements.

  Drive the design and implementation of automated systems to improve production speed, reduce errors, and enhance overall productivity.

  Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand current products and processes and identify areas for optimization.

  Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in automation to integrate cutting-edge solutions into medical device manufacturing.

  Stay informed about advancements in medical device technology and industry best practices, applying relevant knowledge to enhance process innovation.

  Conduct risk assessments for proposed process changes, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards in the medical device field.

  Champion the adoption of Industry 4.0 principles, including IoT, data analytics, and advanced robotics, to streamline operations.

  Collaborate with R&D teams to ensure seamless transition of new products and product upgrades into automated manufacturing processes.

  Collaborate with R&D in the generation of appropriate product specifications through DFMEA and PFMEA exercises and engineering studies.

  Lead or contribute to cross-functional teams working on design transfer activities for new or upgraded products.

  Develop and manage project plans, budgets, and timelines for process innovation initiatives.

  Evaluate and select automation vendors and oversee successful implementation of their solutions.

  Implement robust testing and validation protocols for automated processes to ensure reliability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  Train and mentor manufacturing teams on the operation and maintenance of automated systems.

  Continuously monitor and analyze key performance indicators to identify areas for ongoing process improvement.

  Collaborate with quality assurance teams to implement robust process controls and ensure adherence to quality standards.

  Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to automated processes, minimizing downtime, and optimizing efficiency.

  Drive a culture of continuous improvement, fostering innovation and efficiency throughout the organization.

  Develop documentation related to complex automated processes, including standard operating procedures and work instructions.

  Experience You'll Bring

  Required

  Bachelors Degree Engineering (Masters degree preferred) in a relevant technical field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

  Minimum 9 years Manufacturing engineering experience required.

  Previous project management and people management experience required.

  Proven ability to capitalize on opportunities for continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

  Previous success in driving a culture of innovation and efficiency, fostering a mindset of continuous improvement within an organization.

  Demonstrated expertise in evaluating, selecting, and implementing automation technology solutions.

  Experience designing and testing medical devices preferred.

  Experience developing manufacturing processes and technologies and designing for manufacturability preferred.

  Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.

  Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  Ability to Multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in timely manner.

  Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

  Ability to travel including internationally.

  The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,500.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
