POSITION SUMMARY
The Prevention Specialist – Community Outreach has shared responsibilities of coordinating and staffing a community resource van to provide substance use prevention resources to the public and supporting various projects of the Connecticut Center for Prevention, Wellness & Recovery at Wheeler Clinic. The Prevention Specialist – Community Outreach develops and implements effective strategies for the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. The Prevention Specialist – Community Outreach has a highly visible role and works in close partnership with state and local funders, school leadership, community providers and community coalitions to select, design, and implement a broad spectrum of strategies to address the prevention and health promotion needs of the state and community. The Prevention Specialist – Community Outreach works under the direction of the Program Manager and exhibits a high level of critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making. The Prevention Specialist – Community Outreach may occasionally coordinate and conduct training sessions, conferences, and other professional development events on current topics or trends in the prevention field.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
BA/BS degree in social work, education, public health, or related field is required.
Critical thinking, excellent oral and written communication, and project coordination skills required. Demonstrated experience in prevention working with youth, adults, diverse populations, and people who use substances or people in recovery from substance use, in a culturally responsive and respectful manner is preferred. Working knowledge of relevant software and experience with Microsoft Office applications is required. Excellent documentation skills, attention to detail, and time management are also required. Experience with social media and marketing strongly preferred.
Must hold a valid driver’s license. The position requires regularly driving the community resource van to disseminate prevention and harm reduction materials at various events and targeted community areas. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
Must be able to lift and load boxes onto the resource van which weigh up to 50 pounds.

Candidate will need to occasionally be available to work weekends and evenings for events

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Drives the community resource van and travels locally to participate in community and agency events and activities.

Coordinates scheduling of the community resource van and refines processes to ensure exceptional delivery of services.
Responsible for the procurement of relevant and timely prevention and harm reduction materials to ensure the community resource van is adequately stocked for community events.
Actively participates in the development and implementation of programs to prevent issues of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as supporting healthy families and communities in collaboration with management, funders or other stakeholders.
Provides support for statewide and local prevention and health promotion campaigns and initiatives in partnership with funders and as directed by department goals.
Builds and maintains highly visible relationships with current partners, funders and key stake holders, as well as creates new ones as appropriate.
Helps supervisor implement and maintain an effective communication strategy to promote community resource van and other projects.
Effectively utilizes social marketing, social media and other emerging technologies as prevention and health promotion tools to reach target populations.
Actively participates in project planning and coordination meetings with funders.
Collects and reports on demographic, statistical, and evaluation data for assigned programs and activities.
Completes necessary data entry and other required tracking and data management.
Works in collaboration with Program Manager to monitor and ensure that event and campaign expenses are within budget constraints.
Develops and maintains holistic knowledge of populations being served including cultural, ethnic, sexual orientation, gender, and ability difference.
Provides library services to human services and other professionals, students, and members of the general public seeking information and materials on behavioral health and related issues.
Trains on prevention and health promotion topics as qualified and appropriate.
Assists Program Manager in duties necessary for the success of the program and department.
Promotes the Center for Prevention, Wellness and Recovery at Wheeler Clinic and its activities throughout the state.
Assists Program Manager in providing excellent customer service, responding to funders, and providing community outreach in accordance with program goals and objectives.
Adheres to prevention operating standards, guidelines, and code of ethics.
Continues to develop knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of groups served as well as uses appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.
