This is fourth in a series of five classifications and is distinguishedfrom the Corporal by the formalized supervisory role over PoliceOfficers and administrative duties. It is distinguished from the PoliceLieutenant in that Sergeants are frequently in the field and consideredfirst-line supervisors rather than part of administration as are PoliceLieutenants. Incumbents typically report to Police Lieutenants and havePolice Officers, Police Corporals and student workers as subordinates.Incumbents are required to maintain flexible schedules in order toaccommodate nighttime and weekend shifts. Incumbents experiencehazardous or dangerous situations during the course of their work.
Duties of a Police Officer - 30%
Patrols campus on foot, a bicycle, and a vehicle to deter trafficviolations and criminal activity and enforce federal and state lawsas well as university regulations.Engages with community members one on one and through meetings andoral presentations to provide education on numerous topics toinclude, but not limited to, personal safety and property security,crime prevention and laws and regulations.Constantly analyzes the job for improvements to, or modificationsof, university law enforcement services and makes recommendations todepartment management.Responds to and investigates calls for service from the community toinclude, but not limited to, reports of emergencies, unlawfulactivity, suspicious activity, traffic issues, alarms, missingpersons, animal complaints and requests for general assistance,motorist assistance and complaints. Makes decisions based onanalysis of situation and all known facts.Identifies unsafe conditions or areas ripe for criminal activity;reports conditions and takes corrective actions.Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow-upduties on crimes/accidents; interviews suspects and witnesses;collects evidence and facts; serves warrants, subpoenas, or othercourt processes as necessary; prepares detailed written departmentalreports and files any additional paperwork/reports as directed byfederal, state, or local legal requirements.Compiles daily reports on law enforcement activities for departmentmanagement.Appears in court to provide testimony on investigations.Participates in ongoing and recurring trainings as required by thedepartment and its accrediting agencies, the university, and theArizona Peace Officer Standards and Training board.Trains sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies,procedures, and activities.Works with the university community, general public and partneragencies to solve concerns.Maintains knowledge of, and answers questions about, campusoperation and law enforcement.Supervisory Duties - 30%
Monitors the activities of subordinates.
Analyzes activity reports to determine levels of performance or need forcorrective action.
Arranges work schedule to ensure patrol coverage by assigned staff.
Reviews essential information at beginning of new shift; conductsbriefing session; answers questions, participates in discussion ofinformation and provides in-service training.
Analyzes reports prepared and submitted by subordinates for accuracy,completeness, essential elements, fundamental soundness, andsubstantiation of action taken.
Disseminates applicable new and revised policies and procedures tosubordinates; explains implications.
Analyzes difficult situations or problems presented by subordinate staffand recommends action to be taken or appropriate method or procedure totheir supervisor.
Compiles information for and writes periodic statistical reports on workunit activities and submits to supervisor.
Attends supervisory staff meetings; gives and receives information;participates in problem solving; recommends policy changes and programdeve
