Photonics Applications Engineer - AR/VR
Within the Office of the CTO, the Photonics Platforms Business is a pioneer in the manufacturing and commercialization of integrated nano-photonic devices for applications in imaging, sensing and displays. We are harnessing the power of Applied Material’s world-leading material science and nano-fabrication capabilities to enable the next generation of photonic devices.
We are seeking a full-time Photonics Application Engineer with experience in optical modeling, design, and prototyping optical systems to engage with customers and partners to enable a new generation of AR products utilizing our photonics devices.
The position requires an MS or equivalent in photonics, optics, physics, or related field. Candidates must have excellent technical communication skills, optical design experience, hands-on lab experience, a strong familiarity with optical materials and fabrication methods, and be willing to travel. Previous experience working on product development, and familiarity with optical and mechanical design tools are advantageous. Successful candidates must work well in cross-functional teams to respond to customer and partner issues and develop solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Engage with customers to communicate basic waveguide technical information
Understand customers’ unique waveguide integration challenges
Communicate customer waveguide integration challenges to required internal teams
Communicate to customer technical solutions, tradeoffs, testing plans regarding waveguide integration
Data analysis of metrology data relevant to customer inquiries
Generate standard documentation

Application Hardware Guide for Waveguide Integration
Operate demos for some customers and partners
Must travel frequently with short notice
Must be available for customer support outside typical working hours
Required Skills
MS or equivalent in photonics, optics, physics, or related field
Excellent inter-personal skills (must interact with external customers, external partners, and all internal teams)
Excellent technical communication skills
Excellent technical writing skills
3+ years experience in optical design (experience in refractive, diffractive, polarization optics)
3+ years experience in an optical lab environment (hands-on experience creating benchtop optical systems)
Familiar with optical metrology methods and metrics
Familiar with optical materials (glasses, crystals, thin films, adhesives, etc)
Familiar with waveguide manufacturing processes (Deposition methods, Dry Etch, Wet Etch, NIL, Photolithography, Dicing, Edge Blackening)
Familiar with physical metrology methods (SEM, TEM, Elemental Analysis, CDSEM, AFM, etc
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with optical design software (FDTD, FEM, RCWA, etc)
Experience with MATLAB, Python, and JMP
Experience with 3D CAD

U.S. Salary Range:
$152,000.00 - $209,000.00
The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
