About Park Ranger

Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Park Ranger performs specific assignments that require a general knowledge of Resource Management programs such as recreation management, visitor assistance, forestry, fisheries and wildlife management, shoreline management, interpretation and flood risk management. Responsibilities Participate in the day-to-day operation of recreation areas by checking the areas for compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, camping, noise level, sanitation and safety. Patrol project lands and water to ensure compliance with Federal regulations. Inspect a variety of service contracts including maintenance (mowing, pruning), refuse removal, janitorial, boundary maintenance, law enforcement, etc. Assist with the administration of the shoreline management program. Engage in natural resources management activities such as gathering data to be used in the development and updating of Operational Management Plans and/or Master Plans. Develop interpretive programs by conducting research on topics using sources such as records, books, files, and interviews of people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event when appropriate. Participate in activities such as fish and wildlife surveys, habitat manipulation and development, forest inventories, mapping, firefighting (prevention, suppression, controlled burning). Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes at least two of the following: working at a park visitor center; answering visitor questions pertaining to park rules, historical information, wildlife areas and/or fire safety; patrolling recreational areas to identify safety violations or possible hazards; conducting hikes and/or guided tours of recreational areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
