Working under the direction of the chief physician/investigator and under the general supervision of the Paramedics Manager, ensures subject safety, health and well-being. Continually monitors the subject population at all times, noting and treating adverse events (AEs) as needed. Determine when/if an adverse event should be brought to the attention of the physician/investigator.

Provides basic and advanced medical care, both emergent and non-emergent, to all study subjects, as appropriate. Independently directs the resuscitation and stabilization of a subject in any life-threatening situation using both accepted medical protocols and any study specific treatments

Monitors and records Adverse Events (AEs). Reviews all active AE's prior to dose of study drug and determines if it is safe for subject to proceed with study procedures and/or dosing. If subject safety is in question, may confer with operational management and, or the physician/investigator for additional instruction and/or directive. Reviews all active adverse events daily. Delivers a daily report of AE's to the physicians

Acts as primary subject safety contact for all study subjects in the Clinic

Monitors cardiac telemetry for potentially serious arrhythmia and intervenes as necessary

May performs technical procedures in the Phase I unit including blood collection, vital signs, and ECGs

May assist Project Managers, Physicians and study teams in the logistical planning of study conduction workflows

May perform all forms of dosing, including IV, IM, SQ and oral  Assesses out of range values for symptomology and may medically intervene should study subject's safety be in question

Works on assignments that are moderately difficult, requiring judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations.

Has substantial understanding of the job and applies knowledge and skills to complete a wide range of tasks.

Normally receives little instruction on daily work, general instructions on newly introduced assignments.

Contacts are frequent with individuals representing other departments, and / or representing outside organizations. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data on matters of moderate importance to the function, or the department, or which may be of sensitive nature.

Education and Experience:

High / Secondary school diploma or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification. Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to at least 4 years which should include 3 years experience as a Paramedic on an ALS unit and/or in a clinical setting) or equivalent combination of education, training, experience.Texas Licensed/Certified EMT- Paramedic and American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. Years of experience refers to typical years of related experience needed to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Years of experience are not to be used as the only determining factor in establishing the job class or making employment selection decisions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong paramedic skills including airway management, phlebotomy,I.V.establishment, and injections (intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous)

Strong interpersonal skills

Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

With the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, management, and physicians in a professional and credible manner

Ability to effectively manage multiple complex tasks

Ability to effectively and competently manage emergency medical situations

Ability to perform advanced medical care - both emergent and non-emergent

Management Role:

No management responsibility

Working Conditions and Environment:

Work is performed in a clinical environment

Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms

May require long and varied working hours

Physical Requirements:

Frequently stands, twists waists, squats, and bends neck for 4--6 hours per day.

Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects.

Frequent mobility required.

Occasional crouching, stooping, bending and twisting of upper body and neck.

Moderate lifting (or otherwise movement, carrying, setting, and placement)of 15-30 lbs. with a maximum lift of 35 lbs.

Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.

Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

May interact with others, relating and gathering sensitive information. Interaction includes diverse groups.

Works with guidance or reliance on oral or written instructions from management. May require periods of intense concentration.

Performs a wide range of variable tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions with little predictability as to the occurrence. Ability to perform under stress. Ability to multi-task.

Regular and consistent attendance.
