About Packer Positions (OJT)

  Job Summary:

  There are 3 packer levels:

  Level 1:  Packers at level one status are required to pack/work in the following positions unassisted:BulkDispenser (except 10 Dispenser because of the use of the cooling wheel)Table packer positions of semi/fully automated lines.JKT/Syrup DISP monitoringDairy Pack Robot & Pack PositionsLevel 2:  In additional level 1 requirements, packers at level 2 status are required to monitor semi-automated lines.```{=html}

  Level 3:  In additional levels 1 and 2 requirements, packers at level 3 status are required to monitor fully automated lines.While no supervisory duties are required of packers at level 1 status, packers at levels 2 and 3 status are required to monitor ovens as well as the general packing performance of packers on the line in which they are assigned.

   

  Packing cones is an extremely physically challenging job.  Packers are required to stand on their feet for the duration of their shift (between 5 & 8 hours/day).  Packing cones requires frequent bending, turning, twisting & lifting as well as constant movement of fingers, hands, wrists & arms at a fast pace.  Even though Joy Cone Company is equipped with an evaporative process cooler, it can get very hot (80 -- 85o (in the production areas during the summertime.  Packers are required to be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a consistent basis throughout an 8-hour shift.

   

  Packers are also required to read and understand the Packer Booklet, which includes, but is not limited to, the following information: 

  Machine/Quality proceduresGeneral Quality proceduresFinished Product Coding Procedures

   

  Essential Functions:

  While a level 1 packer is responsible for monitoring the operations of automated packaging equipment, levels 2 and 3 packers are responsible for monitoring as well as the operations of automated packing equipment.  Automated equipment includes, but is not limited to the following:Flow wrapperscartonerscase packerscase sealerslabelersWith regard to Metal detectors, packers of all levels are solely required to verify the unit is on.Monitoring cone qualityConducting row countsFeeding cones onto a moving conveyor (packaging cones as stated in the packing procedures and is documented in the specific Machine/Oven/Line Ledger).Making and sealing casesMonitoring Jacket and Syrup DispenserSorting and stacking rows of cones onto cooling racksSealing cases and stacking onto palletsHand packing over wrapped cones into casesMonitoring Critical Control Points (CCP) and recording checks as directed.Conducting machine/quality/finished product checks and recording checks as well as any issues revealed by the checks, in a timely manner.Packers are responsible for maintaining a neat work station.Packers are required to adhere to Good Manufacturing Policies (GMP).Packers are required to understand and abide by all procedures pertaining to allergen control.

   

  With regard to CQPs/QPs (Critical Quality Points/Quality Points), which are defined as any points in the production process that are critical to the quality of the product:

  Codes: - Packers are responsible for ensuring the code is present and within specification in terms of placement and legibility.Visual Inspections -- Packers are responsible for conducting visual checks to ensure the quality of the product being packaged.  This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  Ensure packer initials are in place where applicable,Ensure proper packing material is being used,Ensure proper packing procedures are being followed. Ensure cartons/cases are free of excess glue, open flaps, et .

   

   

  Additional Responsibilities:

  Other duties as directed by the shift supervisor.

   

  Qualifications:

  Must have demonstrated good work habits and attendance.Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions.Packers must have good attendance (as defined by the attendance policy).Packers must be able to work rotating shifts on a continuous seven-day schedule.Packers are required to continually maintain a high level of mental alertness throughout the course of the shift as packers are required to continually monitor all areas of the automated production process as, due to the nature of automation, jam ups occur.  It is critical that jam ups are caught and corrected upon occurrence. Packers are responsible for the quality of all product packaged as well as all packaging material the cones are packaged into.Packers must be able to detect audible tones and alarmsPackers are required to frequently communicate with coworkers in long and short distancesPackers must have the ability to distinguish and sort by color.Packers must keep a clean work area to ensure safety.
