Job Overview
The Orthodontic Assistant prepares treatment rooms, provides support topatients and assists the orthodontist with a variety of treatmentprocedures, including infant orthopedics, interceptive orthodontictreatment, comprehensive orthodontic treatment and combined surgicalorthodontic treatment. The Orthodontic Assistant also assists in dentalemergencies that occur in the Dental Clinic, Emergency Department(ED), Operating Room (OR) and Procedure Suite (PC).

Department: HP Orthodontics-LoweHours per week: varies based on department needs but projected to be up to32 hours/week with the following shifts: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday:730 AM-5 PM and Friday: 730 AM - 4 PM
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from anaccredited Dental Assistant certification program.Experience: Two years of experience as an Orthodontic AssistantEquivalency: Five years of chair side orthodontic assistant experience maysubstitute for graduation from a Dental Assistant certification program.Certification(s): CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare providers

These examples do not include all of thefunctions which the employee may be expected to perform.Prepares treatment room for patient by following the day sheet treatment plan.Prepares patient for treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating anddraping patients.Sterilizes and prepares instruments, equipment and materials at thechair-side for orthodontist's access.Examines patient and checks for loose or broken appliances prior to procedure.Properly reviews patient's history and medical records prior to patientvisit and provides orthodontist with a brief. Informs orthodontist of anybroken appliances prior to procedu e.Responsible for proper documentation of patient visit as appropriate. Updatespatient health history, patient chart and other patient documentation.Takes properly formatted photographs and radiographs and enters intopatient's record.Provides assistance to the orthodontist during treatment.Performs pediatric prophylaxis.Places and removes orthodontic separators.Properly prepares teeth for orthodontic procedures, such as bonding andbanding.Changes and ligates archwires with elastomers or steel ligatures.Properly fits and cements orthodontic bands.Tries in and adjusts fixed and removable orthodontic appliances as directed.
