Specific instructions and close supervision will be providedby the farm owner and/or supervisor designated by the employer. Workerswill be expected to perform their duties in a timely and proficientmanner and will have close supervision to insure adherence toinstructions. Work will be closely monitored and reviewed for quality.Workers must be able to keep pace with the balance of the crew. Workerswill be required to attend an orientation on workplace rules, policiesand safety information prior to beginning work on or after the date ofneed. Employees will begin work at locations indicated by supervisor.Worker will perform any combination of the following duties concernedwith the general care of agriculture including cultivating, pruning,thinning, training, tying, harvesting and otherwise participating inhorticultural activities under close supervision. Worker will handharvest and pick crops consisting of harvesting apples and pears infields. Apples and Pears: Worker will attach harness, bucket or bag andpick low hanging fruit while standing on the ground and higher brancheswhile standing on a ladder. Worker will pick according to grade, colorand size by grasping fruit with the hands and removing from the tree ina motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on the tree branches, or bruisethe fruit. Worker will carry harness, bucket or bag of up to 60 lbs. andwill place fruit into wooden bins and plastic totes. Care must beexercised at all times to prevent bruising of fruit or breaking ofbranches. Worker will examine harvested fruit in bins and sort out anyfruit not meeting the grade, color and size specifications. Apple &Cherry Tree Planting & Replacing Worker will ride on planter, placingtrees in ground, straighten and level trees with shovels and water treeswith hoses attached to water tank.
Thinning Hand thin to control the size and quality of fruit. Removefruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster ofother fruits. Must accurately identify and remove misshapen, damaged orotherwise unmarketable fruit. Pruning Hand pruning based on fruitvariety. Use manual and mechanized pruning tools and equipment. Identifyand remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branchesrubbing against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood andshoots-suckers and selectively remove diseased limbs and branches due tofire blight and/or bacterial canker. Workers will keep the work areaclean and safe by keeping cut branches away from the walking area.Employee must use small knife to make cuts on the main stem of the tree,from 2 feet off the ground to the top of the tree. Use of a ladder orplatform will be required. Workers may be required to apply a paintmixer to the cut they made with a hand held bottle spray. Companysupervisors will explain and demonstrate if necessary pruningrequirements to all workers at the start of the season and as neededthereafter to ensure quality standards. Care must be taken when pruningso as to provide the right amount of tree limb elimination. Pruningaffects harvest fruit yields and qua ity significantly. Incorrectpruning can cause quality problems and must be prevented at all costs.Cherry Picking Worker will attach harness, bucket or bag and pick lowhanging fruit while standing on the ground and higher branches whilestanding on a ladder. Worker will pick according to grade, color andsize by grasping fruit by the stem and removing from the tree in amotion so as not to harm adjacent buds on the tree branches, pull thestem from the fruit or bruise the fruit.
