  Job ID359432 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyResearch-Researchers Full/Part TimePart-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code8352R1 Employee ClassCivil Service About the Job Major job functions for this position include the following. 1) Laboratory experiments - 80% - Perform multiple complex scientific procedures effectively, efficiently and independently. - Meet project specifications on time. - Track multiple concurrent projects. - Maintain a required high level of cleanliness and refined processing technique to ensure samples are not contaminated. - Carry out laboratory experiments under the direction of UMGC scientists. - Troubleshoot experiments. - Operate all related specialized instrumentation and technologies, i.e. liquid handling robots, QuantStudio 5/7 qPCR instruments. - Maintain instrumentation per manufacture protocols. - Work collaboratively with other staff and researchers. 2) Data Collection and Analysis - 20% - Collect and analyze data using custom or vendor software. - Evaluate and clearly communicate experimental results. - Ability to accurately enter, interpret and analyze data using Excel spreadsheets. - Proficient in Microsoft Office suite. - Assist with data mining and metadata for improving and tracking UMGC services and processes. 3. Job code 8352R1 information * Position/working title: Operations Specialist * Unit and location where duties will be performed: Genomics in leased 4Front location * Length of probationary period: 6 months * Percent time of appointment: 100% * Term and type of appointment: Continuing 40-hour work week will be arranged ahead of time which may include nights and weekends. Work location options include working fully remote, partially remote, or entirely in the office and are based on the work of the position. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. Because we are a land-grant institution that serves the state, the University will continue to- in most cases- expect employees to live in Minnesota. This position has been designated as Profile 1 and is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located in our leased space at 4Front in Oakdale, MN. Genomics' management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time. Must be able to lift 25 pounds. The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position. Qualifications Required (Minimum) Qualifications: Position requires BS/BA or equivalent combination of education and work experience equal to four (4) years. A willingness to work in a fast-paced, high volume laboratory. High attention to detail. Ability to work in a HIPAA environment. Meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability of work. Adherence to all laboratory and regulatory safety guidelines. Preferred Qualifications: (Selection Criteria) Experience with high throughput Microbiome/Metagenomics processing with Excel and operating/programming of laboratory liquid handling instrumentation. Extensive molecular biology laboratory experience in preparation of Illumina next-generation sequencing libraries and bioinformatics knowledge. Experience in a CLIA or CAP regulated molecular biology or genomics lab. Ability to identify problems and troubleshoot experiments. Flexibility in changing job duties. Ability to be on your feet for > 80% of shift. About the Department This position is located at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) in Oakdale, MN, where we provide cutting-edge services to University and external researchers. This position entails performing library preparations for Next-Generation sequencing applications and the general maintenance of laboratory operations. The laboratory work oad consists of following standard operating procedures for nucleic acid manipulation, PCR, operation of advanced liquid handling instrumentation and analysis of quantitative PCR data. Laboratory maintenance requires organization, cleaning, reagent manufacturing, and consumable stocking to ensure the smooth operation of services. The work for this position is project-based, on-site, and laboratory-office hybrid.
