The Nursery/Landscape Specialist is responsible for providing in-depth subject matter knowledge and leadership in the assessment, development, delivery, evaluation and direction of the commercial horticulture education and applied research program in Suffolk County. The target audiences for this specialized position are the field and container nursery growers and the horticultural service providers (e.g., landscapers, arborists, landscape designers, etc.). This person also provides in-depth and specialized expertise on non-commercial horticulture interests (e.g., Master Gardeners, parks and municipalities, schools, etc.) as needed and as time allows. This person will work in collaboration with other CCE specialists and Cornell University faculty in designing and executing educational programs and applied research. The educator will conduct applied research and demonstrations at the LI Horticultural Research and Extension Center in Riverhead and at commercial facilities. This Nursery/Landscape Specialist will also actively collaborate on the planning, development of educational strategies, and evaluation of environmental stewardship and sustainable horticulture programs with CCE Suffolk and other Associations’ Extension staff, Cornell faculty, and other industry representatives. This person will have the ability to seek grant funding and manage budgets in support of the program’s educational and research priorities. The Nursery/Landscape Specialist serves as an in-depth subject matter expert to program committees, CCE staff, and clientele, including agencies and other groups, on a local, regional, and statewide basis.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in agriculture, Horticulture, Ornamental Horticulture, or related sciences with emphasis in ornamental plant production, nursery business
Experience and ability to work independently and as part of a team member and with staff, cooperating agencies and County personnel.
Willingness to learn new tasks.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels. Ability to frequently and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with external partners, program participants, employees, and others.
Proficiency with computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheet and data entry, information access and data analysis
Ability to initiate, plan, teach and evaluate informal and formal educational programs.
Knowledge of pest management in agriculture or ornamental horticulture
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with a minimum of supervision.
Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the Program and the Association.
Ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to legal and safety requirements.
Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ten or more years’ experience in Cooperative Extension or similar educational fields, and knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, and operation of an informal education system such as Cornell University Cooperative Extension
Experience in working with business planning, workforce management issues, and environmental stewardship as related to the industry is desirable.
Experience in grant writing and overseeing budgets.
Experience in conducting ornamental horticultural or agriculture applied research.
