This job requires a minimum of three months of prior experience workingin a nursery, fruit or vegetable farm, handling both manual and machinetasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Disc,cultivate, mow, cut, and weed fields. Perform ditching, shoveling,hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Bending,stooping and kneeling required. Use hand tools including but not limitedto hand pruners, ladders, hoes, shovels, shears, clippers, loppers, andsaws. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Use powerequipment including but not limited to: tractors, planters, mowers,plows, sprayers, cultivators, power shears, chain saws, high lifts, forklifts, skid loaders. Must operate agricultural equipment safely, with orwithout direction.
Prepare fields/soil for planting. Remove cull stock, debris, treestumps, brush, ferns, vines and other growth from planting area usingtractor, mattocks, brush hooks and/or axes. Plant, cultivate andmaintain nursery stock and/or bedding plants in condition for shippingand sale to customers. Pot seedlings or liners\' by hand or mechanicalplanter. Propagate plants from cuttings. Perform general plantmaintenance. Prune, trim, space, transplant and cull plants to ensureavailability of marketable products. Irrigate and apply fertilizer.Pack, label, tag, pull, and store plants by variety. Count, grade, andinventory plants. Prepare plants for digging by tying or wrapping asnecessary. Dig plants. Drum lacing and quarter lacing. Wrap burlap orother covering around root balls and secure with twine and/or staples.Crimp wire baskets. Package, rack and load containerized nursery stockfor transplant and unload other supplies, such as, palletizedfertilizers.Must understand nursery quality control standards and haveworking knowledge of production procedures. Must harvest crops accordingto specific standards. Must select and harvest crops pursuant tocustomer needs. Products must be handled carefully to prevent damage.Prepare greenhouses for winter. Operate greenhouse controls, such as,boilers and heaters. Perform general maintenance of nursery grounds andbuildings, fixing ditches, erosion control, planting and maintaininglandscape beds and trial gardens. Trench irrigation lines, installirrigation lines. Troubleshoot irrigation heads, unblock irrigationheads.
Work is done in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assistin handling product weighing up to 60 pounds and lifting to a height of5 feet. Workers must work on their feet in bent positions for longperiods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensivewalking.
Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and maybe required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, highhumidity and extreme temperatures. Temperatures in fields during workinghours can range from 10 to over 100 degrees F. Workers may be requiredto work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop fieldoperations. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides,herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker\'sability to perform the job. Workers should be able to do the workrequired with or without reasonable accommodations.
Must wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Mustreport for work daily wearing work clothing and boots or other durablefoot wear. Shorts, bathing suits or other casual clothing not permitted.Workers wearing clothing inappropriate for work will not be permitted tostart work.
Employer requires all newly-hired employees to take and pass anemployer-paid drug test before starting work. Drug test not required forprospective applicants p ior to hiring decision. All testing isconducted uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended andaccepted by the new hire.
Housing provided only to non-local workers (i.e. permanent residenceoutside normal commuting distance). Reimbursement for transportation andsubsistence is also offered. Transportation will be provided at no costto workers, from employer-provided housing and, if applicable,centralized pick-up points to the places of employment at the beginningof each workday and back at the end of each work day.
