About Natural Science: Lecturer, Non-Tenure-Track, College of General Studies

Two year position with the possibility of renewal contingent on staffing needs. This position is unionized with a starting salary of $72,000 and a 2-year contract. You will be joining a small faculty of 8 scientists who teach in a team system with colleagues in the humanities and social sciences. We actively seek to diversify our faculty, recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor and nurtures the intellectual and social skills that help us engage affirmatively and skillfully across social, cultural, and philosophical differences.

The assignment will be teaching an introductory biology course focusing on population and community ecology, and evolution (including human evolution) in the fall semester and a human ecology course with an interdisciplinary capstone project in the spring semester. (Course descriptions can be found at https://www.bu.edu/academics/cgs/courses/natural-science/). An ideal candidate would also contribute to our vibrant undergraduate research program through our Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning (https://www.bu.edu/cgs/experiences/undergraduate-research-opportunities/) which helps pair our students with faculty based on research interests. Faculty are also free to design courses for our interdisciplinary studies minor (https://www.bu.edu/academics/cgs/programs/minor-in-interdisciplinary-studies/) and for Boston University’s Cross College Challenge program (https://www.bu.edu/hub/cross-college-challenge-xcc/). Employment begins in the Fall of 2024.

  Required Skills

We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in the field of biology (any field with an ecological or evolutionary slant particularly encouraged) and teaching experience at the college level. We are especially interested in candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to engagement and inclusion of all students, particularly those from backgrounds which have been historically underrepresented in the sciences.

Applications must include a 1) cover letter that describes how your teaching and research/creative interests fit within the interdisciplinary mission of the College of General Studies, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) three current letters of recommendation, 4) a statement of teaching philosophy and how you would develop pedagogies that encourage full participation of students, and 4) a writing sample. Please send your materials electronically ([email protected]) to Dr. Kari Lavalli, Chair, Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, College of General Studies, Boston University. Deadline for receipt of all materials is February 16, 2024. Initial interviews will be by Zoom, followed by in-person interviews.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, natural or protective hairstyle, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.
