  The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a National Senior Advocacy Consultant in our National Center office located in Dallas, Texas (Flexible work arrangements available) .

  In this role, you will be responsible for providing consultation to advocacy staff to ensure policy positions used in campaigns across the country align with American Heart Association’s policy positions and subsequently the science. Additional responsibilities include optimally building the capacity of advocacy campaigns through hands-on field consultation, campaign guidance and technical support. Responsible for building positive relationships with advocacy staff while facilitating the successful development and implementation of issue specific campaign resources. This role collaborates with advocacy leadership to provide federal, state and local staff and their coalitions with a range of public policy activities including: campaign resource development; strategic campaign planning; campaign tactic support; bill drafting, bill and amendment review and guidance; and coalition development and management.

  Responsibilities

  Constant, multi-directional coordination and communication throughout the advocacy operation

  Provide consultation and support to community, state and federal advocacy staff on issue analysis, best practices, available resources/templates, mid-course adjustments and other topics needed for advocacy success.

  Regular and close coordination with policy research team to help community, state, and federal staff in their work on policy and/or regulatory issues.

  Implement strategic technical assistance in support of advocacy staff for successful execution of policy campaigns.

  Demonstrate effective relationship management to ensure effective campaign plan implementation and policy guidance compliance.

  Collaboration with Media Advocacy and Grassroots teams for the creation of social media and communications materials and tactics.

  Serve in a leadership role on behalf of American Heart Association in national policy coalitions and with external partners to represent the policy positions of the American Heart Association

  Attends and participates in relevant campaign related meetings throughout the year, including coalition meetings, as appropriate and to demonstrate further leadership support of American Heart Association.

  Nurtures relationships with public health coalitions and other community leaders to help advance the American Heart Association's priorities.

  Support and advise the American Heart Association's approach to technical assistance for state and local campaigns.

  Qualifications

  Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a public policy leader in state and local campaigns with a demonstrated understanding of all public policy issues within the portfolio of the American Heart Association.

  Bachelor’s degree in political science, public health, public administration or related area.

  Extensive knowledge of local, state and federal government structures and their processes with the ability to assess state and local legislative and regulatory environments.

  Skilled in interpersonal communications and exhibits the ability to optimally work with staff, volunteers and external partners. Able to influence without authority.

  Outstanding oral and written communications skills.

  Must have the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with varying levels of complexity and under variable timelines.

  Must be able to travel overnight approximately 20% of the time.

  Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a registered lobbyist with a track record of success in winning policy campaigns.

  Strong oral presentation skills and strong writing skills.
