What You’ll Do
KBR is looking for highly motivated rising Juniors, Seniors and Graduate students seeking science, engineering and software development opportunities that provide challenging and meaningful work experience to be a part of our 2024 Intern class.
This internship project will update existing KBR back-end optical analysis utilities from MATLAB to Python and create new front-end to improve and simplify user experience. The MATLAB codebase was developed 10+ years ago provide optical system performance modeling and simulation support for AFRL and DoD customers. The codes incorporate a text-file description of the various optical system parameters including telescope, mirrors, fore-optics, surface, and detector. LISA employs its MATLAB scheduler to perform multi-threaded calculations of target to telescope aperture path radiometry and near-field stray light quantities. The calculations predict system SNR and integration time for a set of input options. This allows a system engineer to make performance predictions for a system based upon widely available parameters and/or project specific detailed design parameters. This internship project will support further capability of this code baseline and modernize it along the way.
As a National Security Solutions Intern, you will:
Update LISA optical analysis back-end in code conversion from MATLAB to Python.
Building up code repository and PyCharm test environment working using KBR conventions.
Work with senior engineers to ensure code validation.
Work with senior engineers to detail un-ported code and validation.
Design / Create simple web-based front-end to allow non-expert users and output report format.
Selected interns for this paid opportunity will be provided with the opportunity to mentor with experienced professionals, gain experience and establish a name for themselves in this high demand career field.
Anticipated Skill Set:
Computer science software programming experience with MATLab, Python and PyCharm on Windows
Interested in multiple-processor support
Interested in front-end design such as OpenGL
Optional experience in React/Django for web-framework backends
