National Parks Conversation Association (NPCA), the nation’s oldest and largest national parks nonprofit advocate, has an exciting opportunity for a Mid- Atlantic Indigenous Engagement Fellow.
NPCA’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Office seeks an individual passionate about indigenous engagement and supporting tribal sovereignty through policy and advocacy in National Parks. This is a part-time, remote/hybrid opportunity (20 hours per week) with a flexible schedule.
The right candidate will be able to participate in in-person/virtual events and meetings in the Washington, DC area as well as working virtually to conduct research and plan events.
This position will support the Mid-Atlantic region’s initiatives to deepen indigenous engagement with tribal nations and National Parks. In addition, this person will support campaign work that includes researching current department initiatives supporting tribal sovereignty, reaching out to local tribal nations, and participating in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
Location: Washington, DC (hybrid / remote)
Schedule: Part-time; up to 20 hours per week
Compensation: $22 per hour
Deliverables:
This Fellow will support the indigenous engagement campaign in the Mid-Atlantic region to support tribal nations and national parks in implementation of current department initiatives, such as co-management and traditional ecological knowledge. The fellow will conduct research to gain a deeper understanding of current policy as well as building relationships with tribal nations to support their needs as appropriate. This Fellow will create a presentation to educate advocates and stakeholders about indigenous engagement and current initiatives to further tribal sovereignty in National Parks.
Qualifications:
Current or recent college graduate (within one year of graduation)
Strategic thinking skills with the ability to perform thorough research and produce concise memos and reports
Strong writing, research, and editing skills
Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiian and individuals of native decent from the US territories in Oceania/the Pacific are strongly encouraged to apply.
Enthusiasm, positive attitude, and interest in national park, tribal, and environmental issues
