JOB REQUIREMENTS: Duties Assigns codes to documented patient careencounters (inpatient or outpatient) covering the full range of healthcare services provided by the VAMC. Patient encounters are oftencomplicated and complex requiring extensive coding expertise. Appliesadvanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, diseaseprocesses, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications,procedures as well as the principles and practices of health servicesand the organizational structure to ensure proper code selection.Selectsand assigns codes from the current version of several coding systems toinclude current versions of the International Classification of Diseases(ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and/or Healthcare CommonProcedure Coding System (HCPCS).Adheres to accepted coding practices,guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis,operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code toensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding. Also applies codes basedon guidelines specific to certain diagnoses, procedures, and othercriteria (in inpatient and outpatient settings) used to classifypatients under the Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) programthat categorizes all VA patients into specific classes representingtheir clinical conditions and resource needs. Monitors ever-changingregulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for thefull spectrum of services provided by the VAMC. Timely compliance withcoding changes is crucial to the accuracy of the facility database aswell as all cost recovery programs. Performs a comprehensive review ofthe patient health record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary,demographic, social, and administrative data to ensure complete datacapture. Patient health records may be paper or electronic. Theabstracted data has many purposes, for example, to profile the facilityservices and patient population, to determine budgetary requirements, toreport to accrediting and peer review organizations, to bill insurancecompanies and other agencies, and to support research programs. Assistsfacility staff with documentation requirements to completely andaccurately reflect the patient care provided; provides technical supportin the areas of regulations and policy, coding requirements, residentsupervision, reimbursement, workload, accepted nomenclature, and propersequencing.
