Mechanical Engineer V Location: Redmond (onsite) Duration: 12 Months Description: Work in cross-functional teams with multiple engineering disciplines (optical, mechanical, electrical, firmware, etc.) to design and build experimental setups and engineering prototypes. Guidance and direction to be provided by hardware engineer(s) and research scientists. Skills: Strong mechanical design skills for components and assemblies Assembly and prototyping skills for large lab setups and form factor prototypes Attributes: Ability to construct and maintain complex CAD models of optical and mechanical systems. Ability to own the full prototype loop of design, fabricate, build, and test. Self-starter, motivated, chases down details and follows up and follows through. Actively seeks out answers when stuck, doesn’t wait on the team. Able to work with limited inputs and can handle ambiguity, make decisions. General curiosity and willingness to learn. Able to manage time effectively and work on multiple projects at once. Creative, enjoys design work, detail oriented. Experience level: > 5 years work experience. Knowledge: Design for prototype manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, milling, and turning. Solidworks mechanical CAD experience preferred Familiarity with lab processes and equipment such as lasers. Familiarity working with custom printed and flexible circuit boards, and integrating them into prototype systems. General familiarity with standard optical and optomechanical components (lenses, mirrors, mounts, stages, cameras, etc.) as well as the major suppliers (Thorlabs, Edmund Optics, Newport, McMaster, Digikey, etc.) Additional Information: R&D- can you build weird science fiction stuff, consumer electronics experience would be helpful but not required Top 3 must-have HARD skills: 5+ years of experience is fine Experience in mechanical CAD, MACHINING, 3d PRINTING, LASER CUTTING Good to have skills: Optical mechanical working across different disciplines dealing with working around and installing PCBs experience with ergo models, body worn products, watch, car seat, glasses Story Behind the Need – Business Group & Key Projects: Cave project , but several different areas where help is needed Compelling Story & Candidate Value Proposition: Get to work on the intersection on graphics and human connection - little tests in a head set to room scale - AR VR Graphics Typical Day in the Role: Building headsets, running a scale system - designing for benchtop and larger displays- focused around experiments, combination of building. working with some electrical engineers How will performance be measured: Creative and adaptable, we have an idea that this might work based on the way the optical system works- getting to work quickly on testing a hypothesis.
