Position Description: The MaterialsTechnician is a non-exempt salaried position in the Chemical andMetallurgical Laboratory. This position in particular, you will supportthe Global Materials Development by providing metallurgical analysis andcorrosion testing for various products and materials. You areresponsible for test set-up, preparing chemical solutions, takingtemperature and pressure readings and performs routine checks ofcorrosion testing equipment. You will be photo documenting, sectioning,mounting and polishing of failure analysis samples and assisting insupplier approvals and competitor benchmarking. There are two broadclasses of sample types: Routine (long term/ repetitive samplingprograms) and non-routine (infrequent/ may be one-of-a-kind). Routineanalysis is done using well- defined, long established practices.Non-routine generally requires more technical skill/knowledge andinvolves a wider variety of instrumental techniques. The grade levelsbelow progress from an entry position, typically suited for performing aroutine analysis with close supervision and minimal judgment required,to a senior position, typically suited for almost any sample type andexperienced in all available instrumental techniques. Each progressivelyhigher level requires less direct supervision, does reduced routine/more non-routine work and acquires more responsibility for independentjudgment (method development, data interpretation, troubleshooting,formal report writing).
