Under the general direction of the Executive Editor, the Managing Editor oversees all aspects of production for SHRM’s HR Magazine as well as handing significant editorial duties for the Longform Content Team. Those responsibilities include the assigning and editing of staff and freelance articles for HR Magazine, the All Things Work e-newsletter and SHRM’s Executive Network content, which includes the People + Strategy journal and the EN Brief e-newsletter, as well as writing and editing for additional SHRM outlets as needed.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Oversee production for SHRM’s quarterly print and online HR Magazine, which includes scheduling, assigning and occasionally writing articles, leveraging articles provided by content partners and working with other editors who produce content for the magazine.
Work in tandem with the managing editors of the All Things Work and Managing Smart e-newsletters as well as SHRM’s Executive Network editors to assign and edit articles and related content, track workflow process and coordinate with copy desk, designers and production coordinator to meet deadlines and budgets. Communicate status updates to all stakeholders when materials are due, and work to resolve any issues and obstacles when deliverables are behind schedule.
Research, assign and edit articles to ensure that HR Magazine content platforms meet the highest standards of accuracy, clarity and engagement across platforms.
Edit and oversee magazine features and departments as assigned, performing rewrites and substantive edits as needed, and proof layouts.
Identify and cultivate sources and story ideas, and then turn those ideas into content as needed for the Longform Content Team’s various print and online outlets.
Work with creative and digital product teams to brainstorm and develop effective visuals and graphics for the Longform Content Team’s platforms, including multimedia and interactive elements such as slideshows, quizzes, polls, video, podcasts, etc.
Assign feature articles, columns/departments, infographics, special projects and other content across platforms, and develop and grow a stable of freelance contributors.
Write occasional profiles and other features for HR Magazine, the All Things Work e-newsletter and the Executive Network platforms as time allows.
Stay abreast of publishing innovations and incorporate them into ongoing strategy.
Cultivate sources and contacts among senior-level HR professionals, consultants, government officials and nonprofit representatives.
Post articles to SHRM’s website.
Process freelancer invoices in a timely manner and maintain administrative tools and documents.
Collaborate across SHRM departments and business units to support SHRM strategic initiatives and business objectives.
Occasional travel to cover SHRM conferences and other HR-related conferences and to report articles.
Other duties may be assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
8 years of writing and editing experience, preferably for business-to-business publications.
Digital production experience and CMS knowledge.
Experience working with a wide range of multimedia and social media elements.
Experience creating and managing schedules and managing editorial production.
Print magazine editing experience.
Extensive knowledge of HR, business, government, economic and workplace issues.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Proven ability to work closely with freelance and volunteer editors and writers and conduct substantive edits.
Self-starter and able to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team.
Strong creative and idea generation skills.
Ability to work accurately with minimal need for revision.
Ability and willingness to consistently meet deadlines, even if this requires occasional overtime work.
Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
Excellent research, analytical and organizational skills.
Knowledge and expertise of digital publishing, CMS, SEO, multimedia and analytic tools used to measure engagement.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, InCopy, online publishing, social media tools such as LinkedIn, and email newsletter tools such as Marketo.
Ability to work independently and show good judgment.
Knowledge of SHRM Style and Associated Press Style.
Knowledge of HR, workplace and business issues
PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS
Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
Regularly required to sit; talk and hear, use hands to type. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is regularly performed in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
The hiring range for this position is $98,000 to $122,000 per year. This range is an estimate and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications.
