The School of Oceanography has an outstanding opportunity for a Facilities & Building Manager.
Founded in 1930, it is the only oceanography department to offer all degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in the United States. The School occupies modern laboratories in four principal buildings on the University of Washington campus overlooking Portage Bay. Additional facilities are located at the UW's Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island. The School of Oceanography's numerous seagoing research projects, originally conducted on the R/V Brown Bear, now utilize the modern capabilities of the R/V Thomas G. Thompson and the R/V Rachel Carson, which joined the department's research fleet in 2018.
The Facilities & Building Manager will manage the School of Oceanography buildings (Marine Sciences Building, Ocean Teaching Building, and Ocean Sciences Building) and the School’s multiple labs and service centers.
The position requires independent judgment and initiative to anticipate and balance competing demands from researchers, instructors, administration, EH&S, and similar organizations.
The position reports to the School’s administrator and director and supervises three to four employees who serve as assistant facilities & building manager and operators of Oceanography’s many service labs. This is a 100% in-person position.
RESPONSIBILITIES: BUILDING MANAGEMENT 50%
• Support School and Director’s space planning initiatives.• Identify, develop and monitor policies and procedures for space allocation and planning.• Design and conduct space needs analyses, planning, and utilization studies to improve space utilization efficiency and allocations.• Oversee allocation of space (labs and offices)• Manage access to buildings and space with key distribution.• Work with administrative staff for key deposits and refunds with administrative staff.
EQUIPMENT 30%
• Determine types of equipment and instrumentation that would be most appropriate for use at sea, in the laboratories and in the classrooms.• Make recommendations to faculty, the director, and the administrator for purchase of new equipment for pooled equipment and lab/ship equipment.• Work with vendors to obtain the most suitable equipment.• Maintain classroom and laboratory equipment and confirm equipment functions properly and is calibrated.• Support to faculty for all oceanography classes, including setting up laboratories for experiments and demonstrations as per faculty request. Am responsible for maintaining all academic laboratories
SAFETY 10%
• Serve on Health and Safety Group 10 Committee.• Manage fire and other permitting.• Update and train members of the School of Oceanography on the fire and safety plan and first aid protocol. Identify EH&S safety classes that should be attended by lab personnel; verify attendance for new students, staff, and faculty.• Arrange and follow up on safety training for School employees, including classroom emergency training for faculty and instructors.• As new grants are funded, consult with faculty to anticipate safety needs (i.e., storage for flammables, personal protective equipment) before lab supplies or equipment is ordered.• Ensure that the Laboratory Personal Protective Equipment Hazard Assessment is in place for each lab and that lab personnel have copies.• Attend UW and College of the Environment meetings and trainings as appropriate.
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS 5%
• Appropriately delegate work to support staff and manage performance.• Listen to and address building occupants’ concerns and needs.• Give tours to non-UW groups of School labs, buildings, and space
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED 5%
• The complexity of this position requires the ability and willingness to address additional tasks as they arise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Baccalaureate degree in oceanography or engineering or related field.• Two-three years of relevant experience.• Safety-oriented mindset.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED:
• Ability to successfully navigate relationships between School, individuals and central offices.• Knowledge of UW PD, Facilities, EH&S policies and processes.• Experience sourcing equipment.• Familiarity with HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical and preventative maintenance of building infrastructure.
