  Under the supervision of the Road or Landfill Supervisor, the LightEquipment Operator I perform semi-skilled to skilled work in operationdifferent types of construction and maintenance equipment. The employeein this position operates a variety of light equipment requiring somedegree of skill in performing a variety of job assignments. Thisemployee performs tasks related to road and bridge maintenance andconstruction.

  Job Duties:

  100% -

  Cleans and paints structures.

  Constructs footings, piers and wings.

  Operates light equipment such as a mower, roller, tractor, backhoe,chain saw and other light equipment.

  Patches road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix.

  Performs bridge maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installingand maintaining culverts and filling washouts and installing guardrail,cutting brush, tree trimming and removing debris.

  Performs light maintenance and servicing of work in connection with theoperations of related equipment, perform daily inspection of equipment.

  Cleans or lubricates vehicles, machinery, equipment, instruments, tools,work areas, and other objects, using hand tools, power tools, andcleaning equipment.

  Performs unskilled manual work as assigned.

  Rebuilds roads and bridges.

  Repairs and replaces wood, concrete and steel decks.

  Replaces structural steel, back walls, guardrails and nail ties.

  Spreads dirt, cover, gravel, sand, rock and asphalt, haul material andsupplies to job sites.

  Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers,hoists, saws, chainsaws, drills, weed eaters, wrenches, shovels andrakes.

  Sets out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic, flagsmotorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead, perform workaccording to

  work zone safety guidelines.

  Operates equipment while paying close attention to public traffic,conditions, drivers.

  Sorts and segregates waste such as wood, brush, construction debris,rock, white goods, household hazardous waste.

  Installs and repairs traffic signs, signals, barricades, closes roadswhen appropriate.

  Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  Light Equipment Operator I -

  Ability to operator a truck, roller, loader and other related equipment.

  Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.

  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operatingand maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees ofan organization.

  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest,commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructionsfurnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables instandardized situations.

  Ability to convey and receive detailed or important instructions andinformation to and from other workers and the general public.

  Knowledge of equipment maintenance.

  Knowledge of safety operations or equipment.

  While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularlyrequired to stand and walk, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel;reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The emp oyee is occasionallyrequired to sit; run; climb or balance and stoop, squat, bend, twist,kneel, crouch, or crawl. Lifting, moving, pushing or pulling up to 25pounds does generally occur. Specific vision abilities required by thisjob include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distancevision and ability to adjust focus.
