Description of Duties/Essential Functions
Houston Public Library is seeking a dynamic and innovative Librarian V to work as the Senior Manager of History Research Centers (HRC). The Librarian V will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the existing three special collections locations (African American History Research Center at the Gregory School, Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library, and Houston History Research Center) and the development of the fourth location currently planned to focus on Houston Hispanic History and archives.
The selected candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable about current library issues and trends especially as it relates to special collections, local history, archives, digitization, and genealogy. The Librarian V serves as part of the Customer Experience Senior Management team and plays a critical role in shaping and delivering new and enhanced services. This is a high visibility position that requires ongoing interaction, communication and outreach with customers, community members and stakeholders both within and outside the organization. HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.
The essential duties and functions of the position include but are not limited to the following:
Formulating goals and objectives for the HRC locations.
Serving as an organizational leader with a focus on continuous improvement especially as it applies to local history, archives, genealogy, and digitization.
Directly supervising and mentoring the managers of the HRC locations.
Serving as a large-scale project manager for grants and other projects.
Leading the HRC locations to create engaging and educational programs.
Resolving complex customer issues ensuring consistent operations between locations.
Bringing enhanced local and national recognition to the HRC locations and their resources and representing Houston Public Library at community meetings and conferences.
Developing new initiatives and strategies to further the service priorities of the Houston Public Library.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires application of advanced principles, techniques and theory in a professional discipline or a thorough general business management knowledge. Knowledge of this level is typically obtained through a Master's degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of experience as a librarian are required, including two (2) with management responsibility.
