  Summary

The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan invites applications for a one-term lecturer position for the 2024 summer half-term as part of the 2023 CSP Summer Bridge Scholars Program. Successful candidates will teach one section of CSP 103 or CSP 104, both of which serve as an introduction to the rigorous mathematical reasoning required at the University of Michigan. These 3 credit courses will meet in person for two hours, three days per week. All sections of the course will meet on MWF, but teaching times will vary depending on the section to which the instructor is assigned.

  Responsibilities*

  Successful candidates will:

  1) Share the CSP Math faculty's student-centered, compassionate, and humanistic teaching approach and organize their classrooms as spaces of active, collaborative learning where rigor is balanced with support.

  2) Demonstrate the ability to teach lower-division applied Pre-Calculus courses

  3) Balance academic rigor with support

  4) Devote extra time and effort to students outside class via additional office hours for individualized instruction (conferences)

  5) Provide students with regular, meaningful feedback on assignments

  6) Employ equity-focused, inclusive, anti-racist, and accessible teaching practices

Applicants for this position are also expected to interact with and provide feedback to CSP Academic Advisors regarding student academic progress throughout the term. All faculty teaching sections of CSP 103/104 also supervise a course assistant, who will attend class and lead evening workshops to support students both in attaining content mastery and in acquiring broader intellectual skills in quantitative reasoning and beyond.

In their teaching and course materials, candidates are expected to employ anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible practices. Teaching qualifications, teaching experience and evidence of outstanding teaching will determine the selection of a candidate.

  Required Qualifications*

Successful applicants must be qualified, both in content mastery and teaching experience, to teach concept-and-application-based precalculus and hold at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or related discipline. They must also demonstrate commitment to equity-focused, inclusive, and accessible teaching practices.

  Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree (or higher) in Mathematics, and at least 3-years of experience teaching at the college level is highly desired.
