  Summary

The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan invites applications for a one-term lecturer position for the 2024 summer half-term as part of the 2024 CSP Summer Bridge Scholars Program. Successful candidates will teach one section of CSP 100, a first-year seminar for incoming students. This 3 credit course will meet in person for two hours, three days per week. All sections of the course will meet on MWF, but teaching times will vary depending on the section to which the instructor is assigned.

As the core course in the Summer Bridge Scholars Program, CSP 100 is at once an accelerated introduction to the intellectual life and culture of the University of Michigan, and a course designed to foster academic belonging. Each course section is organized around an intellectually exciting and socially relevant theme determined by the instructor and approved by the course coordinators. Course sections explore social structures, processes, and issues in areas such as political science, public health, education, technology, cultural studies, environmental studies, communications, and public policy. The course has a common set of skills objectives, and each instructor determines a set of content objectives that align with their theme. Examples of previous section titles include: Work, Capitalism, and Robots, Free Speech, and Water is Life: The Intersection of Science, Policy & Activism in the Environmental Justice Movement, and School Abolition and the Purpose of Schooling.

Though section themes vary by instructor, all sections are structured to support students as they gain experience in college-level discussions, readings, and research ahead of the fall term. Alongside their instruction of regular course material, faculty teaching this course are expected to help students gain practice using key university resources, including faculty office hours, advising appointments, writing consultation services, and library resources.

  Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  1) Effectively engage incoming college students in undergraduate course work

  2) Balance academic rigor with support

  3) Devote extra time and effort to students outside class via additional office hours for individualized instruction (conferences)

  4) Provide students with regular, meaningful feedback on assignments

  5) Employ equity-focused, inclusive, anti-racist, and accessible teaching practices

Applicants for this position are also expected to interact with and provide feedback to CSP Academic Advisors regarding student academic progress throughout the term. Teaching qualifications, teaching experience, and evidence of outstanding teaching will determine the selection of the candidate.

  Required Qualifications*

Master's degree, experience teaching undergraduates, and a demonstrated commitment to equity-focused, inclusive, and accessible teaching practices.

  Desired Qualifications*

PhD, demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching; 3 years of experience teaching at the college level. Ability to employ high impact teaching practices.
