Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS)
The Liberal Arts and Sciences Department provides its students with a broad-based liberal arts education which prepares them for junior level study in a variety of majors at the College. The LAS Department offers an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree. In this program, students who are undecided about their majors may experiment with career choices. Moreover, students who have majors or careers in mind may test those intentions by taking elective courses that are prerequisites for their chosen majors. Each semester, a student's schedule of courses is arranged after careful consultation with a program advisor. As a result, effective advisement is a critical component of the work of the LAS Department.
Farmingdale State College is seeking a dynamic, student-centered, full-time lecturer who would also serve as coordinator for its newly established First Year Experience (FYE) Course. This course, developed and implemented in the School of Arts and Sciences in the fall of 2023, is offered by the LAS Department (described above). The First Year Experience Course Coordinator would work closely with the Director of First Year Experience (both of whom report to the Chairperson of LAS) in the ongoing redevelopment, implementation, and assessment of the FYE course. The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time Lecturer in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department. The coordinator will have teaching, service, and administrative responsibilities. The teaching load will include 9 contact hours teaching a mix of the 1-credit FYE course and introductory courses in the successful candidate's discipline. The service component of their obligation would include academic advisement of LAS students. The administrative responsibilities related to FYE coordination are outlined below. This is a 10-month position.
Responsibilities:
In conjunction with the Director of First Year Experience, the FYE Coordinator would assist in the design, delivery, and assessment of the Farmingdale First Year Experience courses including:
Developing standardized instructional materials and resources for FYE courses.
Recruiting FYE instructors and assisting in instructor training
Coordinating delivery of the FYE course including scheduling and faculty assignment.
Developing comprehensive FYE assessment procedures to ensure consistent, effective instruction that facilitates student reflection, skill development, growth, and learning. Assessment may also address LAS program goals and College retention goals.
Monitoring students receiving Early Warning, UW/W, or F in FYE, ensuring they re-take/complete the course and receive support, as needed.
Helping to build a community of practice (among FYE instructors), and conducting professional development related to FYE content.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. The FYE Coordinator may be expected to teach in multiple formats including hybrid, online, and traditional face-to-face classes. The FYE Coordinator, in conjunction with the Director of First Year Experience, will share responsibility for communicating how the work of the FYE course contributes to enrollment management and student retention strategies.
