Job Description:
The selected candidate is considered a subject matter expert with comprehensive knowledge of the job area and will perform mechanical design engineering assignments requiring application of advanced engineering principles, theories and concepts to develop propulsion hardware for spacecraft and missile programs. Assignments may include acting in a lead role for a team of mechanical design engineers responsible for the design of complex propulsion system hardware.
This position requires highly-refined mechanical design skills that will be applied in designing and solving issues in the development and integration of high pressure/power and extreme temperature Mechanical Engineering hardware such as chemical and electric propulsion systems along with propulsion components such as injectors, reaction chambers, nozzles, cathodes, and magnetic accelerators for liquid rocket engines and electric propulsion thrusters. Working independently at most times while seeking the guidance of other senior staff and subject matter experts when necessary, the candidate will support and produce the innovative designs and design changes necessary to be used in these high pressure/power, extreme environment applications.
Essential Functions:
Personally support and lead a team responsible for completion of design tasks that generate mechanical design components and their higher level systems for high pressure/power and extreme environment applications. Interpret engineering models and drawings and perform tolerance studies. Evaluate technical input from hardware suppliers and work with cross functional teams on producibility improvements and cost savings. Candidate will participate in trade studies and preliminary designs using 3D CAD modeling software tools (Creo/NX). Candidate will also support independent peer review of work performed by others on an as-needed basis.
