Summary About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities. Responsibilities Performs a variety of laboring, warehousing, and service issue tasks at any and all of the established warehousing and customer service locations within the US Military Academy. Loads and unloads trucks, forklifts, and other conveyances. Performs general cleaning of warehouse areas, service issue points, linen rooms, loading docks, freezers, etc. Shovels snow and ice, operates a snow blower, lawn mowers, weedwackers, leaf blowers, and similar equipment to maintain any and all of the assigned areas. Manually loading and unloading materials and supplies. Utilizes rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and similar tools and equipment in completing other laboring tasks. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Laborer without more than normal supervision. To include using power mowers and/or trimmers; mowing lawns, trimming shrubs or performing other grounds keeping tasks; and/or performing warehouse-type tasks which include loading and/or unloading trucks; moving, packing, unpacking, and/or sorting a variety of supply items or equipment; or performing general cleaning of warehouse areas, rooms, and/or loading docks. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (other than blueprints) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stands, stoops, bends, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to work at a rapid pace for prolonged periods. Frequently lifts and carries material weighing up to 50 pounds, and regularly is required to lift, carry, and handle items weighing over 80 pounds. When working as a member of a team, often lifts the heaviest objects with the assistance of another worker or workers. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside subject to heat, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted areas. May work on open docks or storage yards. Work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises; falls from ladders; or injury from material handling and other equipment. Required to utilize and wear appropriate safety gear. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a(n) Installations Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. Position may be filled as a temporary promotion or detail NTE (13 months) by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Employees currently located in OCONUS (foreign or non-foreign) are not eligible for a detail to a CONUS position.
