Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Lab Manager, R&D & Fiber Optics to join the Data Center Power and Control Division Team in New London, CT. The Lab Manager, R&D & Fiber Optics will be responsible for providing direction and support on fiber connectivity-related tests across organizations within DAT/DPC. Responsible for managing the fiber engineering lab, supervising fiber engineering interns and lab technicians, and coordinating all fiber-related testing requests. Responsible for the engineering project testing support, for new products, product enhancements, and VAVE/cost savings, primarily with regards to optical and mechanical performance. Works individually or as part of a project team to evaluate, and validate product designs and specifications, with primary Engineering responsibility for optical and mechanical performance specifications for fiber connectivity products. Also conducts or participates in design reviews, validates and approves documentation packages, preproduction builds, and production transfer. Provides mentor guidance and support to engineering team members across disciplines. Provides guidance and support to Legrand group/LNCA’s standards coordination activities.
What Will You Do?
Provide direction and project management for fiber product and test validation efforts. Work closely with Product Marketing, Manufacturing, Engineering, Sourcing, and Doc control teams during product conceptualization phases and throughout the project phases.
Manage fiber engineering lab, including maintaining test equipment, lab supplies, etc.
Manage DAT Engineering's standards library, including assisting associates in obtaining standards documents.
Manage equipment calibration and ISO 14001 compliance support for DAT Engineering / R&D lab areas.
Support Legrand on fiber optics-related TIA standards organization subcommittees (SCs), on fiber-related IEC working groups (WGs) on at least a limited basis, and potentially at other standards organizations (e.g., IEEE). Provide standards-related engineering support to operations, marketing, and customers as needed.
Provide training and supervision to fiber engineering interns and lab technicians.
Work closely with Project Management to schedule, track, and maintain up-to-date project schedules and milestone due-date requirements.
Work with Product Management to develop technical Product Requirements specifications and quality assurance protocols, with primary responsibility for optical and mechanical performance specifications for fiber connectivity products.
Provide detailed test report summaries and analysis for fiber product test validation requirements and as needed for evaluations of returned fiber connectivity products.
Assist in engineering support for both pre-sales and post-sales fiber technical support, taking the lead primarily with regard to optical and mechanical performance.
Provide inputs to Legrand engineering innovation efforts by submitting ideas on new products, product enhancements, etc.
Perform other similar and related duties as required.
Qualifications
Required Skills
Education:
BS in Engineering disciplines or at least 5 years of industry experience operating at an engineering level in fiber optics-related fields.
Experience:
5+ years of related work experience.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Preferred knowledge and/or experience with product engineering requirements.
Strong knowledge of fiber optics and relevant metrologies, such as insertion loss, return loss, and end-face geometry interferometric measurements.
Understanding of statistical process control and analysis.
Familiarity with TIA, IEC, ISO/IEC, Telcordia & IEEE standards related to fiber optics, fiber connectivities, and other relevant fields.
Understanding of and the ability to interpret CAD 2D/3D models.
Engineering documentation, BOM, material management & outsource management.
Engineering ECN (Engineering Change Notice) process implementation.
Knowledge in product production (prototype to production transition, production test plan, DFMA).
Knowledge of product quality and reliability (environmental test, mechanical test, reliability test, etc.).
General knowledge of product safety, sustainability, and other regulatory requirements (UL, CE, RoHS).
ISO-9001 documentation principles.
Sustainability & Eco-Design/Circular Economy principles.
3d print technology familiarity.
Opto-mechanical systems design knowledge is a plus.
Must have strong computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, e-mail, and meeting management software.
Ability to use the internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively.
Requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be-able-to effectively handle multiple priorities.
Must possess excellent project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines, and control a number of projects at various stages of work.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
Must be an effective listener, able to extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.
Must have strong scientific analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information in an effective manner and make recommendations based upon analysis.
Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team-based environment. Fosters open communication and support an environment of innovation and creative change.
Willing to travel as necessary (per LNCA COVID-19 Travel Policy).
