Summary: Alpha Omega is recruiting to staff the recent award for the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information Data Stewardship Division (DSD), which works with NOAA and the broader community to provide and maintain the core tools, systems, services, policies, and procedures that enable long-term information preservation, dissemination, and service delivery in a cost-effective, efficient, and reliable manner. Its four branches, Data Operations, Archive, Software Engineering, and Data Access, ensure conformance with the principles, activities, and responsibilities of an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model Archive (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, 2012; ISO 14721); follow established NOAA, Department of Commerce, and Executive Office policies; and maintain a reliable and effective infrastructure of hardware, software, processes, and procedures to ensure the long-term preservation of NOAA's information products and services. We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled IT/Computer Specialist III to join our dynamic team at Alpha Omega. In this role, you will play a critical part in conducting research, performing studies, and surveys to obtain data, while utilizing your knowledge of theory, principles, or technology in specific disciplines or fields of specialization. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of various IT domains, including information technology, computer programming, computer security, database management, software development, and related fields.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research, perform studies, and surveys to obtain data for informed decision-making. Analyze complex problems and provide expert advice or recommend solutions based on your extensive experience.
Technical Expertise: Demonstrate advanced knowledge in information technology, computer programming, computer security, computer systems analysis, database management, information systems, Internet applications and development, software development, and related fields.
Data Access and Cloud Transition: Lead the Enhanced Data Access Team in maintaining and transitioning an extensive portfolio of software, web applications, and IT systems to commercial cloud computing platforms. Drive the adaptation of products and holdings to the new cloud environment while ensuring continuity of operations on legacy infrastructure.
Cloud Technologies: Spearhead the transition to cloud technologies, including object storage, from on-premise systems. Ensure the availability of NOAA environmental data in the cloud, enhancing dissemination, and enabling technology transfer from legacy operational systems.
On-Premise Data Access: Manage the availability of NOAA environmental data on-premise.
Enterprise System Support: Lead the updating and maintenance of enterprise system support for various applications (TDS, ERDDAP, Hyrax, etc.) to ensure data and products are available for access and visualization.
Legacy Application Support: Oversee and support legacy applications such as Common Access, OneStop, Climate Data Online (CDO), AIRS/HAS web applications, and their associated storage backends. Drive the migration of legacy Apex applications to a modern and reliable architecture.
Document Routing Software: Lead the support and maintenance of document routing software (eNRS) until it can be replaced by a Software as a Service (SaaS) tool.
Ecommerce and Online Store Software: Oversee the support of the NESDIS Ecommerce and Online store Software (NES2) until it can be replaced by a NOAA SaaS tool.
Data Manager Tools: Lead the support for data manager tools such as NERMS, which aids in the management f digital images and publications in the NCEI archive.
Requirements and Qualifications include: Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) or equivalent in an appropriate specialty. 6 to 8 years of experience in a related field. Proven expertise in IT domains, including information technology, computer programming, and related areas. Demonstrated experience in conducting research, analyzing problems, and recommending solutions.
