  The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities. The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Aquatic Biologist II. This position assists the Invertebrate Fisheries Program leader with all aspects of monitoring and assessing population status of commercially important marine invertebrates in Massachusetts coastal waters. This includes direct participation in the DMF Ventless Lobster Trap Survey, Commercial Lobster Sea-sampling Program, and Early Benthic Phase Lobster Suction Sampling as well as other Invertebrate Fisheries Program monitoring and research activities, as specified below. *DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists with summarizing and presenting biological, fisheries, and environmental data for the purposes of characterizing commercially important invertebrates in Massachusetts coastal waters and supporting stock assessments as part of the ASMFC process. 2. Collects biological and CPUE data for commercially important invertebrates aboard commercial fishing vessels. 3. Coordinates under supervision all aspects of maintaining MADMF research traps for the Ventless Lobster Trap Survey. Performs annual maintenance of all traps, maintains an inventory, prepares rigging, and delivers research gear to participating captains. 4. Under supervision, maintains the Ventless Trap Survey Bycatch database and Commercial Trap Sampling program bycatch databases, and performs annual analyses to maintain indices of relative abundance for various species of interest. 5. Assists the program leader with characterization of the whelk (Channeled and Knobbed) populations within MA waters by coordinating at-sea commercial trap sampling, monitoring & summarizing landings and survey data, and investigating whelk life history traits. 6. Under supervision, coordinates operational aspects of the lobster Ventless Trap Survey, including managing RFRs, contracting and billing, and annual station selection. 7. Assists the Invertebrate Fisheries Program with SCUBA based field monitoring activities. These activities include lobster suction sampling, annual bottom water temperature monitoring, and other applied research projects. 8. Performs literature surveys of scientific journals, newspapers, magazines and trade publications. 9. Writes technical and non-technical, letters, memoranda, and reports. Prepares graphical presentations of data for inclusion in reports and publications 10. Operates and maintains field equipment including specialized environmental data recording equipment; motor vehicles, including small craft and trailers; and sampling gear. 11. Assist other MADMF projects with conducting research when time permits QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities): 1. Thorough knowledge of marine biology and ecology. 2. Strong understanding of life history of marine invertebrates from the New England region. 3. Significant ability to effectively manage concurrent program needs within defined timelines. 4. Experience working cooperatively with commercial fishing industry members. 5. Experience working with and maintaining trap/pot fishing gear. 6. Experience conducting biological monitoring or research using SCUBA 7. Experience trailering and operating small, motorized vessels. 8. Ability to analyze and summarize biological and environmental data, and to draw appropriate conclusions 9. Ability to plan and implement marine research projects and to work on or from all manner of vessels. 10. Ability to speak effectively at public and technical meetings and to write technical and non-technical correspondence and reports PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Experience/familiarity with Microsoft Access, ArcGIS, and R. 2. CPR / basic first aid certified. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in marine, fisheries or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience. II.
