Job Description:The purpose of this position is to assign diagnosis andprocedure codes with the appropriate DRG assignment for inpatientencounters, diagnosis and procedure codes, CPT-4 procedure codes, andAPC assignment for outpatient encounters. This is to ensure a valid databaseused for research, reporting, quality improvement activities, reducedays not final billed (DNFB), and appropriate reimbursement.
Scope
1.Assigns ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding classifications based on clinicaldocumentationand/or physician orders. Utilizes appropriate tools,resources and guidelines to determine codes and assign principal and secondarydiagnoses. Obtains clarification from physicians, clinical departments andothers on documentation questions, as needed. Performs coding at an advancedlevel of coding complexity. Codesfor multiple facilitiesand combinations ofhospital chart types.2. Maintains assigned work queues within defined processing timeframe andmeets or exceeds productivity standards. Runs all inpatient accounts throughthe Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) analyzer to determine that the codes aresequenced correctly and all code combinations have been considered to assureaccurate DRG assignment.3. Verifies data abstracted and entered fromthe EMR. Ensuresintegrity ofthedatabase for internal and external data reporting.4. Respondsin a timely mannerto inquiriesfrom Revenue Servicesrelated to useof codes and modifiers within the billing processto assure accuracy and avoiddelaysin the billing process.5. Adheres to all compliance guidelines, both internal and external.Participates in continuing education programs to maintain an understanding ofanatomy, physiology, medicalterminology, disease processes andsurgicaltechniquesto supportthe effective application of coding guidelines andmaintaincredentials.6. Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides byservice behavior standards.7. Performs other duties asassigned.
Minimum Qualifications
RequiredHigh School Diploma or equivalent requiredRegistered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered HealthInformation Technician(RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) orCertified Coding Associate (CCA) Coding credentialthrough American HealthInformation Management Association (AHIMA) OR Certified Professional Coder(CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Inpatient Coder(CIC)coding certification through American Academy of Professional Coders(AAPCThree (3) years in a hospital or acute care setting with multidisciplinaryservice lines required
PreferredAssociate or Bachelor Degree in Health Information or in Healthcare relatedfield preferred
CPT coding experience preferred

Computer skills and 10-key typing proficiency.5. General software skills with MS Office products, including Word and Excel.6. Strong communication and integrity skills, both verbal and written, inorder to interpret medical documents and communicate effectively with medicalprofessionals especially related to compliance guidelines.7. Ability to work independently in a r mote environment.8. Demonstrates attention to detail for accuracy requirements.9. Familiar with coding software such as 3M encoder, Epic and computerizedassisted coding applications preferred.10.
