Job Summary
The Information Security Engineer will be responsible for security engineering and architecture of University of Southern Mississippi (USM) systems in support of and compliance with the USM Information Security Program and other relevant state and federal requirements including but not limited to: NIST SP 800-171, GLBA, HIPAA, and other industry standards and best practices. The Information Security Engineer will assist with security audits, developing and revising policies, procedures, and plans, and devising and implementing Information Technology (IT) risk management methods and processes. Additionally, the Information Security Engineer oversees long-term cybersecurity projects and initiatives as assigned by the Information Security Officer.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supports USM Information Technology Services Cybersecurity programs which includes risk management, compliance management, security training and awareness.
Assists in the design, development, and implementation of IT security, IT risk management, and compliance plans, policies, procedures, and processes for the university community.
Interpret internal or external cybersecurity risk analyses in business terms and recommend a responsible course of action.
Monitor and identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness of risk management processes.
Designs new security measures and implements strategies to address evolving cybersecurity requirements in a cost-effective and compliant manner.
Oversees cybersecurity projects as directed by the Information Security Officer and performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology related field of study and a minimum of four years directly related experience in large, complex, multi-system technology environments. Directly related experience can be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Requires relevant system administration level certification in related technologies or the ability to achieve certification within 180 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced knowledge of security hardening concepts: group policy, firewalls, etc.
Knowledge of scripting and automation capabilities.
Knowledge of operating systems and networking concepts.
Ability to maintain knowledge of applicable policies, regulations, laws, and compliance documents related to cybersecurity.
Ability to exercise sound judgement.
Ability to assess system and information security risks, document and track those risks, and provide input to reports.
Ability to maintain an up-to-date understanding of emerging trends in information security risks; apply new techniques and trends, in-line with overall information security objectives and risk tolerance.
Project management skills.
Strong customer service skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability and availability to work on-call, odd hours.
Ability and availability for light travel.
Preferred Qualifications
A advanced cybersecurity and/or project management certifications and a minimum of four years directly related experience in large, complex, multi-system technology environments. Experience with the following: cyber risk management, NIST frameworks or other related frameworks, security engineering concepts, and project management.
