  Job Description

  WHO WE ARE

At the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) our work is about protecting Michigan’s environment and that work spans research, monitoring, regulation, education, and community engagement. We are equally passionate about creating a positive, professional, and supportive work environment where we value our differences and are committed to being open and respectful of all our employees and the public we serve.

We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.

  WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:

The Industrial Storm Water Permit regulations offer facilities an opportunity for an exemption if sites can meet the conditions of a ‘No Exposure Certification’ (NEC). The NEC requires that the facility operate without exposing industrial materials or activities to precipitation and to certify compliance every 5 years. The Warren District Office has a large number of expired NEC’s that require follow up.

  The chosen intern will:

Make contact with chosen facilities to:

Determine if the business is still active

Determine if the business is still eligible for exemption

Assist business with submitting new application for exemption

Prioritize sites and follow up visits by reviewing aerial photography

Receive training on the Industrial Storm Water Permit requirements

Shadow Water Resources Division (WRD) staff during site inspections

Receive training on WRD’s database MiEnviro.

Intern must possess strong organizational and communication skills. Should feel confident explaining regulations/requirements (as trained) and provide compliance assistance both verbally and in writing.

This internship will bein officewith the expectation that all work will be performed on site at the Warren District Office. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student’s academic schedule and the needs of EGLE’s WRD team.
