Description of Work Unit

The CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences ( CVMBS ) IT Services Research IT group exists to facilitate the mission of our world-class college by providing researchers with effective, efficient information technology to achieve research goals. Research expenditures in CVMBS are $71M in 2023 and the RIT group is responsible for many diverse facets of specialized IT support for the College research enterprise.
Position Summary
CVMBS Research IT is expanding its service portfolio into Healthcare Analytics to leverage the extensive and growing collection of veterinary health data at CSU and develop local and national data sharing partnerships to advance scientific and clinical discovery and healthcare effectiveness.
Observational and other health data from the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) electronic health record ( EHR ) systems, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and other data sources are collected daily using various applications and formats in multiple IT systems in CVMBS . This position is the lead data scientist responsible for wrangling such data into industry-standard medical terminologies and loading into widely used models such as the OHDSI - OMOP Common Data Model ( CDM ), using a combination of existing and custom-developed tools. Further, this position will be the technical lead for CSU responsible for collaborating regionally and nationally to form an interoperable veterinary health data sharing network with the CTSA One Health Alliance ( COHA ).
This data scientist will, in partnership with CVMBS clinical and IT experts, support CVMBS researchers, medical informaticists, hospital operations experts and others in collecting, organizing, and extracting health data through consulting, advising, and utilizing and designing software tools using data science best practices, languages and technologies ranging from rules-based algorithms through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods as needed. This position will also participate in training veterinary informaticists in the creation and use of informatics tools and assist with statistical analyses.
Beyond demonstrating deep technical expertise, creativity, and agility, this position requires someone reliable, ethical, and comfortable working in a team or independently with minimal supervision. The Health Data Scientist must be comfortable working with a wide variety of stakeholders such as students, clinical and research faculty, staff, hospital and lab administration and leadership, IT staff, and external counterparts at CSU and nationwide.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. An in-person presence is required 2-3 days per week. The hybrid/in-office work schedule will be arranged between the supervisor and the successful candidate.
Required Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science or other disciplines closely related to this position.
Strong work experience with the OHDSI - OMOP Common Data Model and tools
Strong work experience with the veterinary EHR models and data used in CVMBS
Strong work experience designing and writing custom ETL code for CVMBS veterinary EHRs and OMOP
Strong work experience programming with Python, SQL
Strong work experience managing Git/GitHub version control and repositories for a team of programmers
Significant work experience working with standard medical terminologies including SNOMED , LOINC , RxNorm
Significant work experience building and using Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) tools to explore EHR records
Significant work experience assessing EHR data quality and using and developing QA tools
Significant work experience collaborating technically with external veterinary hospitals on EHR data sharing
Significant experience in statistical analysis and experimental design
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
Preferred Job Qualifications
Master’s degree in Data Science or other discipline closely related to this position.
Significant experience with R for data analysis
Significant experience as a leader in technical teams and onboarding new members
