NATURE OF WORKAs a member of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division, individuals inthe Head Lifeguard position are responsible for the on-site supervision of theaquatic facility; pool maintenance, staff scheduling and relations,public contact, addressing concerns, maintaining the security of thefacility, shift reports, lifeguard training and auditing.
Head Lifeguards may work at either the indoor or outdoor pool. The outdoorpool is typically open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

SUPERVISION RECEIVEDIndividuals work under the direct supervision and/or leadership of theRecreation Coordinator - Aquatics to carry out assigned duties, functions,roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

Assists with scheduling all pool activities and private rentals to ensureoptimum pool usage; coordinates programming with supervisor and in keepingwith community needs.Assists in hiring, training, and scheduling qualified lifeguards,instructors, and all other pool staff.Monitors activities and directs scanning of the swimming pool and adjacentareas to prevent injuries, accidents, or drownings; maintains order.Rescues swimmers in distress and/or danger of drowning within 30 seconds ofrecognizing distress and administers CPR and first aid.Assures the maximum safety of pool patrons.Performs regular safety inspections of pools and equipment to reduce hazardsand to provide maximum safety to the patrons.Attempts to modify dangerous guest behaviors and enforce all pool rules andregulations by strongly and quickly addressing behaviors to guests of all agesand/or guardians of underage guests.Administers emergency care (Basic Life Support/CPR) and first aidtreatment as necessary.Effectively handles complaints and disciplinary problems involving patrons ofthe pool.Must consistently attend scheduled in-service training to maintain a workingknowledge of current lifeguarding techniques and procedures related to therescue of drowning swimmers including rescue skills, Basic Life Support(CPR Skills), and basic First Aid.Ensures the safety and well-being of the public by conducting staff trainingin water safety, first aid, and CPR; ensures that all certifications ofstaff are maintained. Ensures high program standards are followed; providesregular in-service training to staff in accordance with the Emergency ActionPlMaintains the filtration system and other aquatic operating systems within thefacility for proper operations. Maintains proper pool chemical balance andgeneral water cleanliness. Performs normal day-to-day maintenance to includebut not limited to backwashing, sweeping, vacuuming the pool,scrubbing, and washing the pool area, deck, and filter room.Effectively demonstrates the lifeguard deck rotational system for monitoringthe pools and all other pool deck opera ions.When not performing lifeguard skills, will perform maintenance and cleaningduties to keep aquatic facilities healthy and enjoyable.Operate and maintain the pool equipment; conduct daily walk-throughs of thefacility to ensure appropriate appearance and cleaning of debris; documentneeded repairs and maintenance.Assists in facilitating emergency action procedures for the aquatic andfacility areas.Demonstrates safe work habits with awareness of co-workers and public safety.Handles various reports and records such as chemical logs, incidentreports, etc.Assists other aquatic staff members as needed.Maintain the cleanliness of the facility locker rooms daily.Ensures safety regulations and procedures are adhered to.Performs related work as required and assigned.OTHER DUTIESDepending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:Participates and assists in the implementation of town-wide Special Events,(i.e., weekend rentals, Water Carnival, and Doggie Dip).If working in the outdoor pool area, will be required to handle cash,complete all cash reports and deposits to the appropriate location, andmonitor concession operations.Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology ortools, market research, etc.Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonablydirected by the town.Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
