  The Department of Bioengineering at the University of IllinoisUrbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for a full-time ResearchAssistant Professor in biomedical image computing. This area is broadlydefined and includes research that involves computational imaging, imagereconstruction, medical image analysis, and machine learning methods foradvancing foundational biomedical imaging science. Biomedical imagecomputing is an important strategic area for immediate research growthin the Department of Bioengineering. Additionally, the departmentrecently launched a new M.S. degree in biomedical image computing thatcombines foundational medical image science with modern machine learningmethods. The Department of Bioengineering is committed to creating anaccessible, supportive environment and an educational experience thatrecognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components ofacademic excellence.

  The incumbent will carry out responsibilities related to research,teaching, and public service. The duties associated with the positionare to establish a vigorous and externally funded research programrelated to biomedical image computing. The incumbent will also beexpected to teach courses within the biomedical image computing M.S.degree program. Research track faculty are expected to provideprofessional leadership within the Department of Bioengineering, othercampus units, and the professional community.

  There is a strong heritage of outstanding biomedical imaging andcomputational science research at UIUC, and we are seeking applicationsfrom individuals who are eager to engage with this collaborativecommunity. There have been significant recent investments in fundamentalneuroimaging technologies, including a new human 7 T MRI system andultra-high field animal MRI, as well as translational research on campusand with our clinical partners. The NIH P41-funded Center on Label-FreeImaging and Multiscale Biophotonics (CLIMB) has been recentlyestablished that provides outstanding opportunities related tocomputational microscopy research.

  Our faculty engage in a variety of interdisciplinary projectsfacilitated by our research partners that include the Beckman Institutefor Advanced Science and Technology, the Carl R. Woese Institute forGenomic Biology, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications,two new NSF AI institutes, and many other research centers, clinicalsites, and educational programs on our campus.

  A successful candidate is expected to possess a demonstrated trackrecord of productivity and experience in computationally-orientedbiomedical imaging research as demonstrated by publications, invitedtalks, extramural funding, professional service contributions, and otherrecognized scholarly activities. Minimum qualifications include adoctorate in bioengineering or relevant STEM disciplines and the abilityto teach courses in the biomedical image computing M.S. program.Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity,equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service.

  This is a 100% non-tenure-track, renewable appointment on an academicyear (nine-month) service basis paid over twelve months. Salary iscommensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred starting dateis as soon as possible but is negotiable.
