  Job Description

  The Environment, Health, Safety, and Quality Department supports mission performance and operational excellence while stewarding a safe working environment for all employees at NREL.

  NREL’s intern program provides a diverse opportunity for students and recent graduates. In addition to mentorship and real, hands-on experience, students and recent graduates will participate in professional development activities that will help strengthen their technical and professional skills.

  The successful candidate will be managing various types of Industrial Hygiene (IH) and Occupational Health data streams – with focus on developing quality data management systems and infrastructure under the guidance of senior Industrial Hygienists. The candidate will be responsible for classifying existing IH data prior to developing integrated analytics in our custom platforms. Hands-on IH monitoring will also be part of the internship, including calibration and maintenance of certain IH monitoring equipment.

  The applicants should be knowledgeable in all forms of Industrial Hygiene hazards, corresponding controls, and sampling methodologies including but not limited to acoustic hazards, chemical hazards, radiation hazards (both ionizing and non-ionizing), and physical hazards. Ideal candidates will have experience with statistical tools, best practice data management approaches, and creation of custom tools, either in the Microsoft suite (i.e. Excel or SharePoint) or on other platforms (R shiny app, other GUIs). This internship will be very data-focused, so a passion for data optimization and maximization is key.

  Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience with projects involving:

  Application of IH sampling and monitoring techniques for a variety of hazards and statistical interpretation of those data;

  Using software to create data management systems and user interfaces;

  Building data interfaces with a high emphasis on the non-technical user experience using good principles of design.

  Basic Qualifications

  Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.

  Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation.

  Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

  Additional Required Qualifications

  Experience with one or more of the following: Software: R Studio, SPSS, Matlab, or other similar statistical platform.

  Fluency in Excel and proficiency in the rest of the Microsoft Suite.

  Prior experience (research, employment, etc.) in the application of Industrial Hygiene techniques.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Enrollment in a Master’s program focusing on Industrial Hygiene (ESHQ). (Strong Bachelor's students may also be considered.)Prior experience in design and execution of user interfaces, either custom or software based (Shiny App, Nintex Forms, Power BI, etc.);

  Prior experience in creating custom data tools, both to manage and interpret data;

  Prior experience in ESHQ management systems, management of change within those systems and documents, and architecting strong programs with clear and executable requirements.

  Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

  Job Profile: Graduate I / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300

  NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

  Benefits Summary

  Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
