  A Brief OverviewThe Graduate Respiratory Therapist Level 1 (GRT) is a novice to advanced beginner level practitioner of respiratory care. The GRT at this level administers respiratory care modalities and performs routine care with guidance and or minimal supervision, following physician orders, established policies and procedures and the American Association of Respiratory Care Clinical Practices Guidelines.

  What you will doPractice: Performs delegated tasks for select number of patients and families.Performs ongoing systematic assessment.Implements concise and complete plan of care based on assessment and standards of practice.Demonstrates beginning skill competence in the delivery of respiratory care.Provides a safe environment for patients, self, and others.Evaluates and contributes to the revision of plan of care based on available information.Uses available resources to address the identified learning needs of the patient and family.Establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families.Assesses patient accurately, comprehends finding and communicates patient condition to all team members.Recognizes personal need for help and seeks assistance.Documents patient care provided, utilizing current hospital standards, policy, and procedures.Professionalism/Leadership: Demonstrates acceptance of personal/professional accountability and responsibility.Demonstrates appearance and behaviors that promote a positive image of Respiratory Care.Addresses parents/patients and colleagues with respect and dignity.Arrives at work on time and is ready to start the shift.Gives an accurate report on the patient and family to members of the team.Follows safe handoff practices.Participates in patient care rounds.Participates in departmental based PPM council activities.Uses established standards of care to guide practice.Accepts instruction/guidance from preceptor and other clinically advanced personnel.Uses available resources.Participates in evaluation of self, peers, and leaders.Incorporates into practice recommendations of evaluation by self, peers, and leaders.Practice contributes towards achieving department based goals.Research: Demonstrates an awareness of research and its value to clinical practice.Identifies and reads respiratory care articles applicable to practice area.Aware of any research protocol that assigned patients are enrolled in.Verbalizes awareness that department standards and procedures are evidence based.Demonstrates knowledge of quality improvement activities.Demonstrates knowledge of the research process.Participates in data collection opportunities for research and/or quality improvement activities.Can perform a basic literature search on selected topic.Learning: Assumes responsibility for professional development.Examines successes and failures to improve performance.Maintains a blame free environment.Participates in identifying and meeting own learning needs.Participates in continuing educational opportunities at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.Reads professional journals and books.Participates in professional seminars and conferences.Attends internal education programs to meet identified learning needs and personal/professional goals. (i.e. annual competencies, skills fair.)Begins to demonstrate health care informatics competency in order to manage patient care, outcome data and current and emerging health care technology, which include:o Basic computer competency, including the effective use of patient care devices, computers, computer software programs such as e-mail and word processing programs, and shared network file space.o Information literacy, including the effective use of the Intranet and Internet to find electronic resources for patient care, respiratory practice and evidence-based decision-making;o Information management skills, including the effective use of the electronic health record and clinical information systems, the ability to collect clinical data using quality tools and the ability to discuss, evaluate and analyze outcome data presented in charts and tables.Resource Management: Begins to understand appropriate utilization of financial resources.Articulates characteristics of quality, efficient, and cost effective care.Monitors own use of supplies and equipment and minimizes waste and/or misuse.Organizes self and demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks.Education QualificationsTechnical Diploma Respiratory Care RequiredAssociate's Degree RequiredBachelor's Degree PreferredSkills and AbilitiesInformatics competencies for respiratory therapists:Computer CompetencyBasic use of a computers (e.g. mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports), fax machinesBasic use of MS Office SuiteUse of MS Outlook email, opening attachments, attaching files to emails, and saving attached files to computer.Use of shared network file space.Basic use of patient care devices. (e.g. point of care devices, CR monitors)Navigation and use of Clinical communication systemsNurse Call systemAscom

  Information LiteracyUse of Internet and Intranet to look up basic electronic resources for practiceAbility to find and print Patient Family Education DocumentsAbility to find and navigate the Department of Respiratory Care website and related linked CHOP resource sitesAbility to perform a literature search on the Internet and ability to find professional journal and/or research based articlesAbility to evaluate Internet sites for reliability

  Information Management LiteracyNavigation of electronic health records.Ability to locate and review specific patient data in clinical information systems and the electronic health record.Understanding of policies and procedures around timeliness of care, use of a clinical information system, and support of safe practice. (e.g. use of clinical pathways.)Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools (e.g. hand hygiene).Understanding confidentiality and privacy regulations when using a patient electronic health record.Coordination of patient care information in a patient care record that utilizes multiple systems.Licenses and Certifications
